left turn only around here means "as opposed to going straight into the median or having to cut off the guy to the right of you to keep going straight"
 
you can make a U-turn anywhere where there is no sign saying otherwise. It's drivers like you that sit at a red light with your right turn signal on even though there is no no turn on red sign :disgust:
 
I only know California law which states that at an intersection, unless a "No U Turn" sign is posted, you can make a U turn.
