Ok in what might not be the best career move I am having a disagreement with the CEO of my company and we have decided the internet is the place to settle this.

If you come up to a intersection that has a left turn lane and there is a sign that says Left turn only can you legally make a U-Turn?

I say no. He says yes.

I say if you could make a U-turn why would they put the left turn only sign????????

He says unless there is a sign that says no U-Turns it is ok to make a U-Turn.

Please vote in the poll.

P.S. Anyone who was at Irvington and Palo Verde at 1:10pm today and saw a large white truck make a illegal u-turn please accept my apology

i was under the impression that when there a sign that signs "Left Turn Only" it is trying to tell you the lane directly ahead is on coming traffic trying to turn left as well and it would behoove you not to go straight ahead.

Wait a sec...you are in Tucson.

Tucson is the U-Turn capital of the Western Hemisphere.

if theres an island in the middle then yes (so long as there is no sign saying otherwise)

on just center lane no...never okay to make a u turn without having an island there

(and this reguards SPCIFICALLY to Tucson actually, i worked in traffic court for a year processing cases)

ILLEGAL U-TURNS

Never make a U-turn:

* On a divided highway by crossing a dividing section, curb, strip of land, or two sets of double lines.
* Where you cannot clearly see 200 feet in each direction because of a curve, hill, rain, fog, or other reason.
* Where a ?No U-Turn? sign is posted.
* When other vehicles may hit you.
* On a one-way street.
* In front of a fire station. Never use a fire station driveway to turn around.
* In business districts. Areas with churches, apartments, multiple dwelling houses, clubs, and public buildings (except schools) are also considered to be business districts. Turn only at an intersection or where openings are provided for turns.

The list above is for California.

your post is contradictory. is it a "left turn only" sign or a "no left turn" sign?

makes a big difference.

In AZ I think you can make a U-turn in any intersection so long as it does not have a "No U-Turn" sign.

Otherwise it's fair game.

left turn only really is referring to the fact that you cant go straight from that lane

unless there is the no u-turns sign, you are allowed to make the u-turn

depends on the state.

in some states, you can never make a u-turn.

but in general, the only time you can't make a uey is if it says you can't.

Even if it happens to be legal it just seems stupid to try a U turn at an intersection thereby doubling the amount of traffic that can hit you.

You can totally make a U-turn. Left turn only means when you are in that lane you can only go left. Sometimes you can go straight or left. The only time you CAN NOT make a U-turn is if the sign says "no u-turn". This is California law btw.. not sure what state you're in.

Um.. a lot of times it is safer to do a UTURN at an intersection with most of the traffic held back by red lights.

When he made this u-turn, did he perhaps turn his steering wheel to the left? I would say that falls within the bounds of "left turn only." It was just a 180 degree left turn instead of a 90 degree left turn.

If he made a u-turn to the right then please slap your CEO for me. Otherwise he is right.

Most of the time, if it doesn't say No U-Turn, you can make a U-Turn but like what everyone has said before me, it all depends on your state.
