I'd rather have a good quality 300 W than an el cheapo 430 W any day. However, your choice of Antec for the 430 is a good one. If you want to go with Antec TruePower, why don't you just get a smaller one? It will be fine with the load, even if you add a couple of drives later. Hopefully it should be quiet too. It's rated quieter than the Enermax Whisper, but it still isn't a PSU that's really recommended for an ultra-quiet PC.

P.S. I just got an Enermax Whisper 350 W. Works fine, but the reviews are true. It's not as loud as the cheapo ones, but it's certainly not Whisper quiet. I ended swapping out the thermistor controlled fan for a Panaflo.

Who said anything about a cheapo 430w? Last time I checked Antec was a very good brand. I haven't read a bad review on the TruePower 430w yet...and I've read at least ten reviews (by hardware sites, not including reviews from people who have bought it and reviewed it at certain stores who also had nothing but positive things to say).

Thanks for all the input folks. I convinced him to order the Antec using the argument that it will last a long time, and it's better to be safe than sorry when dealing with a PSU. I'm getting it for $80 shipped which isn't a terrible price. Plus, we got enough cash to cover it so I figure why not go for the sure thing.

Again, thank you all for your responses. Feel free to comment further if you like.

This is a MUST read for people looking for power supplies. Please read it all.

Its been a few months since I read it, but here is a rough summary: Many power supplies often cannot supply what they are rated at. Often they supply 100W less than marked on the box. A crappy 350W power supply might only supply 250W of power.

Thus people run a crappy power supply at 300W or 350W and it doesn't work. Then they come onto forums like this and say everyone needs far more than 350W. The fact is few people ever need more than 350W, but the person who had troubles was running a horrible power supply.

A quality 300W power supply that truely gives 300W will be plenty for your machine.

I never meant to say the Antec was a cheap brand. I fleshed out my message 1 minute later and quite a while before you posted your message.I guess you had my first edit on your screen for a while before you posted.

The only time I had to change my PSU to a 400w from a 300w was on a ECS K7s5a board. Those boards where known to require a good power supply.
It would run fine witha 750 duron but when I tried to put a 1600 xp on it it would randomly reboot. Bought another generic 400w and everything was good.

I myself went for the overkill on my main rig and bought a Powerman 450w psu. I just wanted to rule out the PSU as the cause for problems specially when overclocking and tickering.
It was just one less thing to worry about. specially when building your own rig and you happen to get a bad part people will start to say whats your PSU at least you can say its good and move on to the next possibility (bad mobo, ram, video card, hd ect)

good luck

who knows you may need that much power if you decide to downgrade to a FX video card hairdryer
