I've been pretty busy these last few months and figured the more loyal followers could give me a hand. My current PC, which was built towards the end of last year, uses an Epox 8KHA+ with an Athlon XP 1700+. The system runs great, but it's time to build a PC for my daughter. I have a cheapo motherboard (PCChips) that a friend game me which is capable of running the 1700. Sooo.. I figure I'd buy a new CPU for my board and pass the 1700 down.

Question is: what is the best overclocking Athlon that I could buy for my board? I'm currently running the 1700+ @ 1550 (11 x 140Mhz) and it's been very stable, so I know the board/RAM is up to snuff.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! TIA.

Thanks for the reply.. Few questions..

Do you think Newegg would have the stepping you mentioned for the 1900+? Also - what type of cooling is your friend using to get that chip to 1.9GHz?

NewEgg is carrying the XP1900+ OEM AGOGA as an overclocking special. There have been a bunch of the XP1600+ AROIA's come out of 'Egg for $ 55,
but the draw is a crapshoot, some get the Green AROIA-Y's which have been running as XP2000's or 2100's, without tampering, but it's the
luck of the gambler. Even been some other steppings show up that haven't been good 'Clokers.

Feelin Lucky ?

Captn: Thanks for the info. Where would I find the 'overclocking' special on newegg? Do they have a retail version? (The only reason I ask is because I already have an Alpha PAL for the new processor but will need some basic stock cooling for my 1700 which will end up in my daughter's PC).

If you really want a speedy processor, but willing to spend a bit more money, I'd wait for the XP2400 or 2600s to come out later this month (Early next month?).

Or you can get lucky like I did, and order an AXP1600... just look how fast I got it in the sig.

Try this link NewEgg AMD CPU
It's about 3/4 way down the page for $95. The AGOGA XP1900+ OEM part. Click the pink/lavender link in the middle ot their page for more information.
They're still selling the XP1600+ for $ 52.99, but theres no assurance that the draw would be an AROIA or a AGOGA for the XP1600, but I guess you could call them and ask.
Both options are free freight, but there a $ 42 price difference. Might try to order both, and see what you get. You'll at least have an XP1900+ AGOGA, and they might deal you a pair of Aces. Worth the gamble ? Worse case senerio is you have a spare CPU at a decent price if you ever need it.

Make sure to set the ALPHA up with the fan set to suck heat up & out - they run cooler that way, and the heat from the CPU is delivered right to the back case exhaust fan
pick-up area, so you don't add more heat into the case environment.

I would actually try one of the 2400+ or 2600+ T-breds once they come out. You could be doing 2.4GHz with an Athlon!

The problem is that I don't think that my mobo (Epox 8KHA+) will support the 2400 or 2600 +. (Or will it?) Plus, they're going to be uber expensive (well, at least in AMD terms) when first released. The point here is that I need a replacement for my current 1700+, hopefully that won't cost me too much.

Thanks for all of the tips... leaning towards the 1900+ AGOGA at this point.

PS. Thanks for the linky Captn
