After being around a lot of mini schnauzers and owning a standard schnauzer, I will never own another breed again.

I recommed the Standard because they are bigger and are more active. Schnauzers are a very smart breed, good with people, and do not shed at all. Not to mention the beard.

Not sure if it is just my dog or if it is a breed trait, but she only barks when she is inside and hears someone at the door or pulling in the driveway. The rest of the time, she is very quiet never barks at anything when she is outside in the yard or out for a walk.

What about a bull dog? They are fun, short haired and do okay inside. Though I think they get some weird health issues as they get older.

what you want is a mutt
get one from a foster family, that way they can tell you if the dog is smart/trained/housebroken etc

I just adopted a poodle/schnauzer mix and it's been great so far.

I would goto your local shelter/SPCA and adopt one that doesn't shed and isn't too tame or too ferocious (somewhere in the middle) would probably work. Do not buy from a breeder.

Yeah, they do. I would not get a bull dog... I have two. :p There are a lot of reasons not to get a bull dog.

Probably looking for something in the 20-40lb neighborhood, maybe up to 50lbs but call it small to medium. I live in a suburban townhouse with a small backyard and no fence so the dog will be in the house most of the time. For lack of better words I don't want anything gay but I don't need a pit bull. Something that is definitely a guys dog. Preferably a breed that's known to be intelligent and easy to train (not looking to have it fetch beers but at least easy to house train and will listen to basic commands). Definitely want something with short hair that doesn't shed.

You could also add Portuguese Water Dog to the list.

All dogs shed but obviously some breeds(which Mosh listed) shed very little. Also, plenty of purebreds in rescue. If you're concerned with a dog that might be too energetic, you may want to look into an adult dog.

Check my sig for available rescues for any breed.

fwiw - I just recently adopted a 10 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback from Ridgeback Rescue. Great dog but probably the most energetic dog I've ever met.

This as well.

How many people can really leave their dog outside all the time? Unless you have a huge fenced in yard it's going to be inside all the time. Many dogs are perfectly happy spending >90% of their time inside and the point of the thread is to help identify them. I'm not saying I'm going to lock it in the basement and not let it see the sun.

Where do you get your numbers from?

I don't care if everyone who owns a dog leaves it inside all day, that does not make it right.

Dogs are not autonimons animals. They need intense training, constant attention, and lots of space. They get lonely. This country is pet-crazy, but in reality a very small minority of the people that do, should own dogs.

some dogs do fine indoors much of their lives, personally I think cats should always be indoors or out on a leash/in a screened enclosure.

However, most buy larger dogs that really need to exercise...walking doesn't cut it.

You think dogs would do better outside? My dogs would murder you in your sleep if you left them outside, not to mention paw their way through the damn wall trying to get in if you did.
