Help me pick and RTS to play

I have been in the mood for some RTS gaming. But can't decide what I want to play. I mainly stick with the age of type games. I have rise of legends, and only played it a couple times, but it didn't catch my interest. I also have age of empires 3. I played it for a while and it was fun, but not as much as some of the past ones.

So I am thinking I could either try rise of legends again, get the new expansion for AOE3 and give it another go. Or I could get a new one. I am considering rome total war with the barbarian expansion, I also think BFME 2 could be fun, but is out of my mold. I know there are others like *craft cames, but again I have never tried that type of RTS, not sure if I would like it. I am also considering going back to age of mythology and the titans expansion. That was my all time favorite RTS, but is obviously a bit dated.

So basically I can get AOM, rome TW, BFME 2 , or the AOE3 expansion for 30 bucks. Obviously I already have rise of legends, but it really didn't excite me, I will give it another try, but want to look at the other options.

I am a big fan of archer type units, probably one reason I didn't like ROL. Hopefully that helps

Yeah I have heard good things about it, looked into it a little bit, wasn't sure if it was my cup of tea. But I will keep looking at it and keep it on my radar.

Company of Heroes is an excellent game. Fast paced without being frantic, great graphics, great gameplay especially the cover system with deformable terrain.

Empire Earth 1.

Made by Rick Goodman. This game is what Age of Empires II *should* have been. AOE 3 sucked, Empire Earth 2 sucked.

I loved rise of nations, great game, I could consider playing it again as well.

Not sure if I will like the warhammer type games, but will check out the COH demo.

I played empire earth 1, wasn't impressed.

Also after looking around, I may add some other possible titles to my list. Civ4 seems great, but is still fairly new and expensive, and somewhat complicated from what I hear.

Also baldurs gate 2 gets great reviews, but is old and hard to find.

Oh if Civ4 is on your list definitely get that - I only didn't recommend it because it's not real time.

Civilization is easily and by far and away the best game ever. Thousands of people and dozens of review sites that gave it 10/10 will back me up.

BFME2 is good, I also love Act Of War. this one is totally different, but there's an RTS called Heaven & Hell. I got it off Ebay cheap. Don't think the US release has happened? (or will ever?) but it's fun. Very different and I'm enjoying it, maybe I'll go play it now.

Another vote for Company of Heroes. I'm currently playing it and am absolutely floored with how much fun it is. I've been playing RTSs back to the days of Dune 2, and this is easily in my top-3 of all time.

Yeah I have read some reviews, but I have never played a civ game, although I do think I tried the civ4 demo when it came out. Just not sure if I would enjoy the turn based type of play, and I hear it is a hard game to just jump in and play. I don't mind a learning curve, but I don't want something with a 20 hour tutorial

Warhammer Dawn of war is pretty good.

The first game's story has you playing the space marines, but has 4 "races" for skirmish/multiplayer.

In the Winter Assult xpansion there is a story for the good guys and one for the bad guys. It also adds another "race" as well as new units to the other "races".

The newest, Dark Cursade, is very nice. It adds 2 more "races" and is about taking over an entire planet with whichever race you choose to play out of the 7 available. I really like that when you fight in a territory and win, what ever you build is still there if the pc attacks that territory. It kinda reminds me of the RISK board game except you get to fight it out instead of rolling dice. It also is a stand alone deal, you only have to have the others if you want access to those races in multiplayer.

the civilization series is awesome. there is some learning curve, but once you're in to it... man, it's like digital heroine.

Edit: i realize it's turn based, not real time, but i saw it was mentioned up above and just wanted to second it.

for multiplayer at least. WestWood games (preEA) are the best single player.

I will likely mainly stick to single player, if that helps. I have never gotten into online gaming. I don't know why, just never really gave it a try.

Yeah company of heros does look good, I will have to check out the demo. Again its not really the time period I like for my RTS's, but it looks good. What engine is it running off, or did they create thier own for it? Is it easy to learn?
