I have the following assignment in my Tax Accounting class:

This bonus assignment is only for those students that did not get the 50 point bonus for taking the IRS VITA exam early. This assignment is designed to be both enjoyable and educationally valuable! Probably the most critical skill in researching is to identify the issues that must be researched. If you don?t see the question, then you will miss things and frequently come to the wrong conclusion. During the term we have discussed many aspects of federal taxes and you should have a good command of many potential issues.

You and/or each group of up to four students are to gather and watch a movie and to list all of the tax issues you can derive from the film. Any English language film is okay, except no x-rated or animated films are permitted.

While you watch the film list all the tax issues you can identify. Indicate the film title and type a brief synopsis of the film plot and the list of issues to hand in. You should double-space the paper and each group members name should appear on the paper. All group members will receive the same grade. You do not have to resolve the issues, only identify them.

Examples:

A marries B in the film- the tax issue is change of filing status from single to married joint

C steals a car in the film- the tax issues are illegal income to the thief and a theft loss to the victim

The paper will be graded by the number and sophistication of the issues you can identify. Remember, relax, have fun and think!!!!

So, help me pick a movie to watch!

The Matrix - depreciation of self-aware, self replicating mechanical constructs

Edit: also, do you list them or yourself as a dependent? Perhaps they can deduct expenses incurred in maintaining your sleep pod under "medical expenses"?

Maverick. Gains and losses from gambling, Travel expenses, including riverboat fare, meals, and accomodations. Plenty more in that movie as well.
