Someone might want to slap me for this, but a buddy of mine picked up a 2003ish Saab 9-3, and that's kind of a cool, different car. It was cheap, (< 5k), and with the IIRC 210 hp turbo 4 banger it move along pretty well.

Yup, you guessed right.. Someone (everyone?) will slap you, because 9-3 is not RWD sedan.

Wasn't that the Saabaru?

I'd go with the Japanese version, if OP did want an AWD car. You know...because they still exist. Would generally avoid purchasing used cars from companies that no longer exist.

Or wait...I think someone finally 'rescued' Saab...but I wouldn't bank on a lot of American support for their cars. I dunno how much transfers from the Subaru (whole drivetrain, at the least, AFAIK)

edit: wait I'm a retard...thinking of the 9-2. 9-3 is/was still the 'standard' (read: backwards weirdomobile) Saab format. Which is to say, the same drivetrain layout as a Porsche, but slightly relocated....about six feet forward. :D
