Help me pick a new LCD

I've been using my IBM P275 for a while now, and while I really do love its image quality and nice colors, I've been thinking about getting an LCD for college, for space reasons. It sounds a bit counter-intuitive, but I'd like a BIG (24") LCD, I'm just looking for something a bit less deep. I'm also not looking to spend a ton of money, preferably in the general range of $600, but I'll make exceptions.

My uses are going to be mixed - I game some, watch movies, but I might use my LCD for graphics and such as well - and I'm pretty picky about image quality. I've come to the conclusion that I probably want an S-IPS panel, but I'm having trouble finding reliable information on some panels. For instance, I've heard mixed things about this panel, some saying that it's an S-IPS and some saying that it's not. The LCD thread seems to promote this one, but I'm not really sure about it.

Can anyone here speak from experience about choosing a mid-range panel?

The more I read about it, the more I like the BenQ - is there any better 24" in that pricerange? Also, is the WZ version worth considering?

Ive seen Dell 2407WFP's go for about $500-$600 in the FS/FT section here. Those are S-PVA panels though, dont know if that is better or wose than S-IPS, but they are great monitors. I have the older 2405 myself and love it.

Bump - would like some advice.

Heard on another forum that the BenQ is inferior to the Dell and Samsung, but the reviews I've read say the opposite. Any monitor recommendations?

i think s-pva or pmva is generally considered worse than ips, but far better than TN.

ips 24" is pretty hard to find, though i think there were some 23" ones with ips when 23/24" panels first came out (i think HP made some)

yep. theres no 24 inch s-ips panels. only 23 inch and the next smaller would be 20 inch. apple put an s-ips in their 23in lcd and also an hp(which you've mentioned). but those panels and the technology within is pretty old in relation to whats out now. i think they were around 16ms response time. also from what i've heard, if you plan on trying to use that apple display on a pc.. well first i think you'd need a special adapter and then you wouldnt be able to make any adjustments to it (contrast/brightness etc)

Ordered the BenQ - can't beat $430. I asked the customer service rep to check the monitor for dead pixels before shipping, and he assured me that could (and would) be done, and if not, I'll get him nailed to the wall. Man, what a deal.

i think the reason is that lg/phillips makes IPS panels, and the 24" is various brands like au optrionics and samsung etc and are all VA based.

i think the reason the IPS ones did not really succeed was they were 1" smaller and thus looked worse spec wise.
