I bought a backpack a few years ago and just use that. Carried into work everyday (when I had a job), and will carry into work everyday at my new job. I currently carry it to school each week.

I'll be 35 next month if that matters.

ETA: I also don't need a bag when I'm not carrying my laptop. All I carry otherwise is a small bi-fold that holds 6 cards (credit/debit/licesne/insurance/cash), my BlackBerry, my keys and my chapstick. Why men have to carry so much shit is beyond me.

I forgot to add my blackberry to my list, which I've been leaving at home since I already carry too much shit, and don't wear baggy pants, so it's kinda embarrassing.

So its:
-Blackberry
-Palm Pre
-Zune
-Headphones (in ear by necessity, prefer grados)
-Wallet
-Keys
-compact digital camera (mostly just weekends)
-American spirits
-Lighter

Yeah, I need a bag! thanks for all of the suggestions

the_dude8- those bags seem pretty nifty - and cheap! thanks!

As silly as that sounds, it isn't a bad idea if you're concerned about theft. They're cheap, and don't look like they're worth stealing.

this is what I am currently using: messenger bag

only $25 too.

I guess it's made to draw on or something and comes with a sharpie marker but I have not drawn on it or anything. I just left it plain.

Great price and plain enough to not scream "LOOK AT ME!" Would you say it's a good size for my purposes, or is it too big (more of a laptop bag)?

I have one almost the same. It has a small design thing on the side. I believe it's this one

This is the "Jack Bauer" bag. I've recommended this bag many times before, based on my personal use. It's very durable and should meet all your requirements.

Sold!

Pretty much, that is. Though I'll keep the discussion going, for other people in need of man-bags :)

Glad I could help! Like I said, works perfect for what I use it for (lugging crap around every once in a while) and it's even survived being accidentally left in the rain for a few hours.

im using a timbuk2 blogger that i got 3 or so years ago, used, $50. best $50 i ever spent. tons of pockets to hold things (mp3 player, camera, mouse, small laptop/netbook, books/tools, pens, id, whatever) and it doesnt scream "laptop bag"

also its built super tough. ive not been easy on it and it has held up almost as good as new.

edit: its also got a rubberized inner coating to waterproof it.

That stuff is built to last

unless its real military surplus, be careful. there's lots of junk made to look like milsurp and marketed as such, but it isn't.

Maxpedition is ok, but if you want something that will last a lifetime I introduce to you the alice pack
