Prepaid is crap. You have to activate a new card every 30 days, and - on a per minute basis - it's extremely expensive.

I'd say go with Sprint PCS. They've got the best technology, coverage, and plans right now.

are you from norcal or socal?

in norcal, cingular coverage/service blows. sprint is mediocre, lotsa dropped signals if you're on the move. at&t is probably the most clear but most expensive, especially if you travel a lot (roaming). don't have too many friends with verizon but they seem ok.

Verizon is good if you're in SoCal. I have it and I get better reception than my friends with Sprint and Cingular. They are having a promotion now that if you sign up, you get 2000 night and weekend minutes.

prepaid is for people with bad credit and cannot afford huge deposit for contract plan.
prepaid costs much more for the phone and per minute charge.

Cingular, Verizon, Alltel, AT&T, etc. all those services are cr@p, in my opinion. The only companies selling a decent 1900mhz all digital service out there are Sprint and Voicestream. I personally use Voicestream, because I have to go to college for 9 months of the year in this small town in upstate New York, where Sprint PCS isn't covered (though it will be by the end of the year). I would much rather have preferred to get what my parents have which is Sprint PCS. They have the most kickass phones too. But if you get Voicestream, that's not bad either. I'm pretty happy with it. They both have a lot of the same features, like two-way text, extended power capabilities, logging on to AOL IM via your phone, etc. You really can't go wrong with either of them, as long as you don't live in some hick town in the middle of nowhere.

And yes, Sprint PCS (and Voicestream) does have a family plan, though my parents actually found it more suitable to get two seperate plans.

Here are some coverage maps: Sprint PCS

Voicestream

Although, you'll definitly have to do some searching on the sites for more localized maps that show whether or not your area is covered.
