i picked up a G60 with 83K miles for $3000. Went straight to the shop, got lotsa of new goodies. Having eurosport intercooler pipes, new ISV, vacuum lines replaced, boost/air fuel gauge pod on A pillar, rod bolts studded (ARP), new trans :),and stage 4 Garret upgrade (cam, fuel pressure reg, chip, overdrive blower pulley.

Car will be very solid when its done, total cost about $6K, and then about another $2K for stereo and radio. Real blast to drive, cause im all city, and of course, a very uniquely styled car that you don't see all over. If i had about $10-11K i would have got a nice VR6 corrado, but i don't want car payments at all.

Don't you ever get tired of driving the same car that everyone has?

my previous cars:
90 mustang 5.0 (gave to brother)
95 cavaler (sold to 15 year old girl)
88 bmw 750il (wish i could afford to repair it!)
94 taurus sho (wish i could afford to repair it)
87 300zx turbo (again wish i could afford to repair it)

i haven't had car payments in over 7 years, and since i've been mechanically inclined, never been stranded on the side of the road.
I've also gotten to drive a lot of cars i've truly enjoyed and hated.

Kinda like girls , you gotta trade them in every once in a while and try out a new model :)

(j/k of course on the girl thing)

I'm pretty big, 6'3 and about 220 and I really don't want one of those smaller sized 4 door cars like the Contour.

thanks for all the help guys, I just saw a picture of the Nissan Sentra and it's out. too small. Let me list some names of cars that I am considering and you tell me what's best:

Pontiac
Grand Am
Grand Prix
Bonneville

Buick
Le Sabre
Centry

Ford
Crown Victoria

Toyota
Camry

Honda
Accord

which of these, or cars like these would be best. I know that Camry and Accord are probably out of my price range for what I want.

ditto on the Maxima...

if you want something newer,

go with a regular taurus. I have a 96 Sable with 80K miles
and never had anything non-maintence related happen. Its a
solid car with lots of interior room. You should be able to pick
up a 96-97 Taurus with low miles for 8K tops.

cool,
you like your sedans big -- Crown Vic :)
My mom has one... good power.

I would highly recommend. lots of room, powerful egine.
buy one with the touring package. Boosts horsepower
from 190 to 220 I beleive. Has Dual Exhaust.

get some nice touring tires 235-75R15's and you'll have a nice ride :)

I think a used 1993-94 Camry is within your price range. Personally, I prefer a Camry over the Accord because of the quieter ride, but I think Accords are more sportier.

maybe I will look into a Taurus, the prices are reasonable compared to the Accords and Camry's.

But everytime someone in my family owns a Ford, it seems like there's always a nagging little problem with the car.

again..my mistake. I thought he said he wanted a manual tranny.

either way..most of the cars will give u the same result if you are a conservative driver.

How about an older Impala SS <the bad-ass ones..not the crappy ones we get now.>

Dude, you HAVE to get a camaro z28, or a pontiac firebird! they will eat all those 4 bangers for lunch!

No seriously, your first problem is looking at American cars. If you want an 8 year old car that will actually run, you have to go Japanese. If you want an 8 year old car that will run, and have some sort of style and originality, you have to go German. American cars just aren't built to last much past 100,000 miles.

If you don't mind a 2 door look at the thunderbird. Its big enough to get 4 people into easily and has a big trunk without being as huge as a crown vic. The only thing to look out for the ford vic and bird is the trans. Make sure the trans has been flushed when it was suppost to be and continue to do so or you will get a shudder going into second gear. We have a bird with around 240k on it so it will hold up just take care of it. The older tauruses have a big trans problem that flushing won't help so I would stay away from those unless the trans has been replaced already. We also have one of those with 200k on it but the trans was dying for about the last 60k and is now about undrivable.

"American cars just aren't built to last much past 100,000 miles. "

Thats a bit of bs

thedarkwolf,

do you know the model years on the taurus' that have transmission problems?
Also, when you mean "dying", can you describe what you mean by that?

Ours is a 93 and I have heard they changed it a bit in 94 but I am not sure how much better they were. My uncle has a 89 and his was replaced at around 60k. In our taurus the trans problem started out slipping sometimes going into I think third, its been awhile, and for about the last 20k-30k every now and again it will stick in second and refuse to shift out of it till you turn the car off. Now it does that a lot and has been parked till we either sell it or fix it and give it to my sister. The t-bird, same engine and trans as a vic, has been a much better vehicle than the taurus. I am pretty sure it will hit atleast 300k before it gets retired.

btw t-bird is a 96

Sentra, maxima, galant (lovely car), contour, passat.

The sentra is a good car for your needs, and so is the galant. Infact the galant is a lot nicer car than you think.

Maxima, without a doubt. Should be able to squeeze into a '95 for that price.

Maxima. I just don't see how you can do better for the money.
I got a 96 SE 75K, with every option except heated seats.
(Leather, Bose stereo, climate control, sunroof, abs, spoiler)
I paid 9500 plus tax and registration at a dealer auction.
The engine is silky smooth. One of best V6s in the world. The car is big inside, and it's very fast.
And it loses resale fast, so you can get one for little money. Just keep in mind it eats 92 octane only.

Maxima's are great cars. My wife and I bought an 2000 Altima (4 cyl - a step down from the Maxima) and are pretty happy. We have enough room for the baby seat and her parents in the back seat while still keeping enough room in the trunk for my sister-in-law.

Hmm, I think I will look into Maxima. Problem is, I did a search for used cars within like 64 miles of my town and only like 2 nissan's came up.

Aaron - I tested out several Contours - I'm 6'3" (almost 6'4") and 175. I fit good inside of one. I'd really suggest that you actually go and test one out :)
