Help me pic between 2 job offers....

Offer 1 -> 80k/yr (before state tax) + options and standard benefit package(2% match on 401k) around 40min drive from home without traffic


offer 2 -> 68k/yr (no state tax applicable for this offer) + 15% performance bonus + 10% towards pension + 5% match on 401k and only 5 min from my home with or without traffic


help I gotta pick today.....

Offer 2, a 5 minute commute to a good job is a luxury that not too many people have these days.

Unless offer 2 is in the middle of nowhere in Idaho, otherwise this is a no brainer.

offer 2 looks better...but look out for the 15% performance. Some companies are good with that and others aren't. If it is good, you are looking at what...another 10k...and you are about the same money wise, but you get pension and more of a 401k match. otherwise if they are bad, you get 70k a year and pension and benefits...then it is really close assuming you dont mind the commute.

Offer 2 will still have state tax if you live in MA.

However, move to NH (if you can) to then avoid the tax.

You did not indicate benifits on Offer #2.

The stress that you will avoid ono Offer #2 may be worth the pay cut; however, you should never count the bonus unless it is the deal breaker. A bonus may not come through depending on company performance.

Offer 2, after awhile of driving 40 miles with traffic you'll regret making choice # 1.

I've done it for years and refuse to do it anymore.

How is this a hard decision?

The 15% bonus and state taxes basically make up the difference in salary. The 5 minute commute alone is worth a few grand.

Whats wrong with #2 that you would even consider #1

I live in NH, offer 1 is in MA offer 2 is in NH. Ok, everybody I have talked to so far is leaning towards offer 2. I have talked to the recruiter and put asked for 72k. I told him I will stop by at lunch and sign that offer if they come back with that offer. Lets see what happens. I am sure they will negotiate, 4k is not that bad.

I'd say option 1 since that 15% bonus doesn't sound like it's guaranteed and I'm all for the money. Although I work less than 5 minutes away from home myself and I love it! But I didn't have to choose to give up $12K either. The pension and no sales tax in option 2 sounds nice though. It's a tough choice, but consider yourself lucky that you have it!

Based solely on the information you provided, I would go with Job #2.

However, there are other things you should also be considering. Things like differences in job security, salary vs. hourly, OT and on-call policies, company culture, etc.

Just talked to the recruiter and he says he feels good about the counter offer and expects it to be approved by the end of the day
