ok, here's a link to a bunch of images.

The top one is our current, ugly, crappy logo. What I'm going to do is replace with 4 (or so) of the other iamges, and a random image (from those 4) will be picked for the top of the page each time the page is loaded.

I realize that the images are blurry and kinda crappy looking. After I decide which images to use, we will buy high res iamges, and they will be nice and sharp and pretty.

When you ook at the pictures, you shoudl think of california, but they should also relate to water and or geology, as that's what we do. I'm going to keep at least one of the SF pictures, though :)

Which of the 8 do you like? pick as many as you want, rank them in order if you like...

Thanks!

I like this one: hyperlink. You need to increase the saturation a bit, so the greens are greener. :)

You're like the annoying people upstairs who complain whenever I change anything on the site :)

i think you should work with the current one.

rather than using a pictured background...
use a poster color one... like the one that you have currently.

the reason being... if you're trying to make a banner to represent usgs...
it's gotta be some what relevant.

if that relevance is strong enough... then fine... go ahead and use the picture..
but the relationship isn't all that strong.... in all your choices.

at least with poster colors... your letters in white will be more ledgeable..

I think they all look good. Why not use all of them in your random page load. Or make an animated .gif or flash banner where the text remains static but the 8 photographs change every so many seconds.

I'm not changing the USGS logo, (like I'm really high enough up to do that:)), which is the text, and the litttle "wave" thing on the left. I'm trying to make the USGS logo relative to california, and even more specifically, water in california.

My supervisor just came by, and he wants to use all of them, so I may not have to choose, at all :)

Man.. its just stock photography behind text.

I'm going to have to say that their current logo is the best one there.. It's a) original and b) required *some* effort.

Having said that.. the only one that works.. is #7.

What would you do? The amount of effort required is not the point. Actually, the less effort required, the better, as it's significantly cheaper that way.

Wasn't any harder to get this job than any other similar job. Apply, interview, get hired.

Maybe I wasn't clear, but that's what I was going to do :)
