I am a VW guy, I have had many of them. I also prefer Chevy trucks - I've had many of them as well. I am thinking of getting some kind of "American" sports car. Here's what I am starting to think, Chevy doesn't make a decent car anymore....I know, the Corvette. I am talking about middle class stuff like the Camaro, Chevelle etc. I mean, what happened to them? Now we get stuff like the SSR - Yuck! While Ford is putting out the best "looking" mustang ever IMHO, and I am starting to have sexual feelings towards the new GT-40 - I keep telling myself that these feelings are wrong then I visit a site about vettes and the feelings are subsided for a while. Am I missing something????

WHAT CARS DOES CHEVY MAKE THAT COME CLOSE TO THE "NEW" MUSTANGS AND THE GT-40's???

First place, the SSR is not a middle class vehicle any more than the Corvette is. Have you looked at the price on that monstrosity?

Second - No, Chevy does not have a Mustang competitor (or a GT competitor for that matter).

The Mustang is pretty much a class of its own at the moment.

I can't believe that they are wasting time and resources on things like the SSR (which does suck, and I have seen the prices), while Ford seems to be making headway in the whole "Put-a-racecar-in-your-garage" game.

I guess the closest thing GM makes to the Mustang is the GTO. Not really direct competition to the Mustang though :(. They basically handed that whole market to Ford when they killed the F-body.

yeah, I sorta forgot about the GTO. I just miss the days when you could go to a chevy dealer and look at a V-8 powered RWD car (i.e. Camaro)

To even mention the SSR and the GT40 in the same paragraph is laughable.

The SSR is a mid-life-crisis-mobile, and doesn't really have any nuts...it's a PT Cruiser with a tiny pickup bed on it.

The 2005 Vettes are a quantum leap over the previous generation, and have finally entered the bottom of the "world class sports car" arena.

The GT40, while only in it's first generation already is in the same arena the Vette just entered. Of course, the GT40 costs a whole lot more than the Vette, so that's expected.

It will be interesting to see how the Vette vs. GT40 wars pan out.

on 2nd thought. The GTO looks like a Grand Ma with a lot more HP, whereas the Mustang looks like it could kick some @ss.

I am not really trying to debate the power vs. price, but the fact that Ford seems to have so many "cool" cars (IMO, of course). It just seems to me that Chevy is screwing around with things like the SSR and kinda blowing the whole "retro" thing. I mean the could make a new Chevelle SS, how cool would that be?

Unfortunately, the new GTO is a two-door Grand Prix. Yes, it has a very nice powertrain, manual trans, etc, but the body sucks BAD.

There is no mustang GT competitor. Period. Every other manufacturer has either abandoned the segment, or never started in it. (Lot's of fastish imports, but they mostly cost more and have much better handling).

If you want a pony-car, there is now only one option.

well a base 350Z with similar performance can be had for around that price if you don't like the GTO. personally i don't think the GTO is that bad: by not having some flashy styling, it has a low used price, and it is rare. (i have never seen one in person)

what's with it? it's replacing the aged cavalier. many people have high hopes for it, along with the SS version. my take on it is that it'll just remain a car like cavalier... if anyone buys one, it's because of its price. it'll never really compete with corolla/civic or even the focus.

I've seen 2-3 GTO's and probably could have driven one, I just wasn't interested in that at the time. I was at the dealership looking at a Duramax diesel truck and wasn't even thinking of a car at the time

The Mustang is the best it's ever been...not completely crazy about the exterior; the interior, however, kicks ASS.

Gone are the Good Old Days of the TransAm, Z28, Supra Turbo, 300ZX turbo, etc. Back then, you had a choice of really nice rides.

The 350Z is a hot ride on paper...it needs some tweaking though.

I'd love to see a balls-out TURBO (real turbo, high-psi boost; not some pussy ass wimpy 2-bar of boost) version of the 350Z. But it would never fly past Nissans' lawyer brigade.
