I'm attempting to build a gaming computer on a budget. Everything in the case (so excluding monitor, speakers, peripherals) should total <$1000. After reading dozens and dozens of product reviews and other things, I have decided upon the below configuration, but I'm entirely up for suggestions, especially if they will improve my rig's performance without making the price skyrocket.

BTW: I desire to play new games (CS:S, HL2) with great performance. (Not flawless, but I want a bang for my buck, ya know?)

Let me know what you think...

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 1GHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor
Abit AV8 K8T800PRO ATX AMD Motherboard [12.0" x 9.6"]
ASPIRE ATX-AS520W BLACK ATX 520W Power Supply
CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit System Memory
Seagate 160GB 7200rpm Serial ATA Hard Drive
NEC Black IDE DVD Burner Model ND-3540A
SAMSUNG Black 1.44MB 3.5" Internal Floppy Drive Model SFD321B/LBL1
Leadtek A6600 GT TDH Geforce 6600GT 128MB 128-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X Video Card
CREATIVE Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS 70SB035000000 8 (7.1) Channels 24-bit 192KHz PCI Interface Sound Card

I'm fairly sure it is, but are these components compatiable? I've heard good things about this mobo, but is there a better one with a similar price? Should I go for a PCI-Express slot/video card instead of an AGP?

Thanks for your opinions.. =)

Go with the 3000 Winchester and overclock it to 3500 speed. Avoid AGP board. The Abit AX8 supports PCI-E video card. Look into an Enermax or Fortron PSU with at least 400 watts. I would hold off on the PCI audio card at this time. The onboard audio is perfectly acceptable for a $1000 PC.
