Help me out Linux gurus...what is the best study book to get Linux certified!

I messed with Linux VERY little so I need a book to give me the ins and outs of Linux. My goal is to get my LCA... well, that is my company's goal for me at least. What are some suggestions from the Linux gurus or even better yet, from the people who have a Linux cert.

BIG THANKS!!

Oh ya, one other thing...I want to use a hardcore Linux distro. I've tried Mandrake, and although a good distro, I want something that will force me to learn the guts of Linux. I'm thinking Debian or Slackware?

i'm not sure what you mean by study books. but there is lots of documentation to help you out. the FAQ's on debian.org, man pages, and the o'reilly series are also very helpful.

I guess you're talking about books for the Sair certification or similar. But AFAIK, there aren't more than maybe two or three books that specifically address those certs, so, if you've got a big bookstore nearby, I would just page through them and pick one whose style appeals to you.

That being said, I think you'll get more by reading the usual gamut of Running Linux, linuxdoc.org, man pages, and books on specific sub-topics of interest. And, as with any other cert, the best way to learn the stuff is to get in there and play around with it, which fortunately is a lot easier with Linux than with MS or Cisco. I can say that, after three years of working with Slackware, a couple runs through Linux From Scratch, and some mild networking, most of the practice questions I've seen for Sair were cake.

Ok, very cool guys. I've messed with Mandrake, but I'm going to install Debian to check it out. I want to get my hand dirty and probably force myself to just use Linux for awhile. Anyway, I'll check out those books and other online docs. Thanks A LOT!

good luck with the install. it's fun. 😛

linux doc's system admin guide, maybe network admin guide too. read oreilly linux books.

try slackware, it will force u to compile from source (necessary skill for any unix or unix like OS). debian will teach u to rely and apt, their package mgmt software. and very few other distros use apt. u might try redhat, its very inudstry standard linux. redhat package mgmt is becoming the de facto linux standard (i think its gonna be included in next revision of Linux Standard Base).

there are quite a few books actaully .. There are an RHCE, Sair, and LPI "Certification Bibles". Sair makes their own books also. There are exam crams for all those. There are also books by New Riders and many others .. good luck =)
