Specs:
XP1600+ (agoia 0204 K.... not sure if these will even do it... damn gameve)
Epox 8k5a2
Samsung 2700 512mb (true samsung, from newegg)
Thermalright sk7

I went into the BIOS and changed the CPU from 133 to 166. It booted as a 1000mhz. Not quite what I was looking for.

Total noob at this, so if anyone could walk me thru, or just tell me that oc'ing isn't for neanderthals like myself, I would greatly appreciate it.

If it's the chip that's limiting me, I will rma to gameve since I did pay extra for the week 12 Y and did not get it and try my luck with newegg, which I shoulda done in the first place.

/me kicks self... hard.

That chip should be able to hit a 166MHz fsb. The multiplier on the 1600+ is 10.5X, so if your bios defaulted to 100MHz you should be getting 1050MHz on boot up. Check you bios settings, 10.5 x 166 should give you 1743Mhz. Also you might need a mild boost in core voltage, maybe 1.80 or 1.85v.

that's definitely what happened. 10.5 and bios defaulted to 100. why would it default? i *know* i typed in 166. maybe i didnt change some settings. i figured all i would need to change is the fsb. i'll tinker some more.

anyone out there with an epox 8k5a2 know the exact settings to change? gameve is offering to exchange the K stepping for a Z stepping. i dont wanna if this will hit 1750 easy.

check the jumper on your motherboard, maybe it's set by default at 100fsb instead of 133

yeah, there was a jck1 jumper that defaulted to 100mhz for the cpu host clock. but, that being changed, it *still* doesnt take anything else i put in the bios. i am going into the Frequency/Voltage Control and simply changing the CPU clock from 133 to 166... f10, reboot. i know it's at least taking some changes because i did up the vcore voltage a tad to 1.8 and that has remained.

anyone out there have an 8k5a2 that can walk me thru the needed bios changes?
