Ok, I've got one.

Not so old, and a bit lacking in details. I recall playing it when Everquest was something to talk about, probably around the time SOE released Tanarus and Infantry playable from the Launchpad...maybe a bit later.

Anyway, it was sort of massively multiplayer. Two teams of sorts, with ships, you controlled a small group of units, I want to say 4 or 5 by default and flew through different areas to places that were contested by the other team, you could upgrade...it was free to play online. I suck with the details. It was a nearly top down game that felt like an RTS except there were tons of people on each team.

Yeah, I know, I'll never find it again.

Hmm, that could be a lot of games

battlezone 2?

homeworld?

Uprising?

I hope its Uprising, I LOVE that game. That was awesome on my old 386/486.

Star Control was fun, especially the 2-player shoot-em-up mode.

688 Attack Sub was the first game I played 'online'-- again, me and a buddy of mine, about 15 years ago. It had a modem play mode, 2 subs against one another, and you would ping to find out location. Kinda funny really-- you couldn't see anything, just listen and shoot. Not much gameplay, but it was a blast.

Speaking of old war games, anyone played battlehawks 1942? That game was cool. I played it on my moms old PS2 when I was ~12 years old.

It was basically a flight simulation for the war in the pacific during WWII. It had a manual about 400 pages long that told you the histoical basis for all of the missions in the game and I think I read every single page of it 20-25 times. If anyone has a copy of this game and the manual I would pay good money for it. Its pretty much the reason I am a big WWII buff now.

Sadly none of the three. It's far less...fully 3D and while it was ships and such, they were really flying along the terrain, not so much in space. They were small objects on the screen (imagine something like wraiths from Starcraft only looking a bit better and an angled top down view so it appeared you were looking at the vehicles from the side).

I'll never find it :p

[edit] Oh, when I said it was free to play online, I meant it was free totally, and only supported online play. That should remove a whole bunch of possibilities.

Glad to help. I shudder everytime I think about how much money I've spent in my lifetime on videogames. Its probably (no kidding) pushing $15-20k. If it came out for the pc, chances are I've played it.

As soon as I read that I thought die by the sword... but alas I am too late.

15-20K huh... heh you?re a noob, I eclipse that many times, it's actually quite sad. I haven't played most of them either.

Anyone remember One Must Fall?

Or, the best game ever: Castles II: Siege and Conquest?

Or, the second best game ever: Stars II? I only had the demo, and I don't think they ever made the full version. :( I was so disappointed; I wanted to build the Genesis machine...

Oh yeah, maybe Raptor is in the runnings somewhere as well.

My brother and I always argued: pulse cannon or autotracking machine gun thingy? (We only had the demo version).

I say autotracker since you can concentrate on dodging bullets, but he said pulse cannon since you can kill things really fast. :p

Hm, I was thinking about old games... and you know what one of the worst ones was? X-men: Madness in Murderworld. That game had such horrible controls which made it incredibly difficult. POS game!

One of my favorite old games, and probably the most fun to play, was "Forsaken". Came out right around the Voodoo2 and TNT. My friend and I used to play over modems. Fun times.

Thats $15-20k just on software, if you include hardware.....<shudder>. Also, that doesn't include games that my parents bought for me while I was a kid, so that rules out all those $30 atari and commodore 64 games I had.

Speaking of commodore 64 games, anyone remember a game for the C64 where you basically developed a gladiator/creature? You could chose the style of creature (dino, spider, human etc.) and could modify their abilities to0 make them more powerful. All I can remember specifically is that if you chose the Dino you could purchase bolo grenade for him.

Ohh!! Speaking of old school rpg/C64 games, anyone here played Legacy of the Ancients?
