help me make a RAID

I have two PATA 250 GB HD of same model, but different revision. I'd like to set up a mirror raid, one of these hard drives has like my life on it. 😛

Should I buy a RAID controller, buy a new mobo with RAID on it, or just software RAID them? Is there any serious disadvantage to a software raid?
