I need some suggestions on how to make a badass milkshake. I am not just talking some milk and ice cream here. I need some recipes that will rock your world.

Anything goes. I can get whatever you suggest.

I am going to try a few of them and see if I can put together the best one possible. It is going to go along with a V-day present.

So what do you suggest?

Instead of milk use half & half - that should increase the richness considerably.

Also buy a premium high butter fat ice cream.

Whipped cream in a can as a topper.

No idea what the guy/girl you are making this for likes but if its fruit - add fruit. if its candy add their favorite candy (Reeses, Snickers, Cookie dough, toffee)

Vanilla beans. Half them and scrape the insides of them into a boiling simple syrup (2 cups water/ 2 cups sugar) and strain them into Fmr's idea.

Which is funny cuz last time I got a shake at some crummy diner it was about 8 bucks.
How times have changed.

Also, malts are far superior to shakes. In fact I think I'll go to Red Robin and get one right now.

This is going with a dinner I'm making the GF. She loves milkshakes and I was going to surprise with some homemade badass ones. Believe me... Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

that'd be a $7.24 milkshake today

edit: use blue bell if its sold near you. it has less air in it than any national brand for a higher quality ice cream.

edit2: cheesecake shake on the right

From Paula Deen:
Classic Vanilla Shake

4 cups quality vanilla ice cream
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
8 tablespoons sugar
2 cups milk, less for thicker milkshakes

Blend until smooth.

From Bobby Flay:
Malted Black and White Milkshake
2 pints good-quality vanilla ice cream, slightly softened (recommended: Haagen-Dazs)
4 tablespoons malt powder
6 ounces chocolate sauce, divided
Whipped cream, for garnish
Shaved bittersweet chocolate, for garnish

Place 1 1/2 pints of ice cream, malt powder, and 4 ounces chocolate sauce in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour shakes into 2 tall glasses, leaving a little room at the top. Place an extra scoop of ice cream on top of each shake and drizzle the remaining 2 ounces chocolate sauce over. Garnish with a large dollop of whipped cream and some chocolate shavings.

Hot fudge and chocoalte sorbet goes well with ice cream and milk. Mmmmh. I would use 1 cup of milk for every 5 cups of ice cream.

Jesus, adding 1/2 cup of sugar??? Well at least it doesn't have any butter...

Date Milkshakes are pretty good. 1/2 cup chopped dates + ~1 cup milk + 2-3 cups vanilla ice cream = mmm.

Chocolate banana. Cut the banana up, put a few slices in the bottom, cut the rest up into smaller pieces and then blend it up so that the chunks can go through a straw. Do a quick freeze (as in one of the methods to quickly cool a beverage, not just put it in the freezer) just before serving. Maybe add a few banana slices to the top, and possibly whip cream, maybe some chocolate shavings as well.

Bare minimum, get a big straw (one 2-3 times the size of a typical straw). Much better for shakes, especially if you go for the thicker ones.

You might try doing a fluffier, easier to drink part on the bottom and thicker towards the top.

Is there ice cream involved or is it just banana?

Whole milk
Real Vanilla ice cream (Breyers works well)
Hershey's Dark Chocolate syrup
Milk Chocolate shavings
Whipped cream
Chocholate wafers

In a blender, add 3 scoops of ice cream and about 1 cup of milk, and mix on "whip". Add a little more ice cream or milk until it makes a thick vorex in the blender. Add chocolate syrup to taste (I like it DARK!). Add in about 1/2 handfull of chocolate shavings*, mix a couple of more seconds, and pour into a tall glass.

Add whipped cream to the top, then stick a chocolate waffer into the cream for garnish. Pop a cherry on there if you're a purist :)

*make chocolate chavings with a potato peeler and a frozen Hershey's bar.

And this, my friends, is the ultimate shake. Easy, pure, and good.

if you happen to know a place that sell papaya fruit, you could try this milk shake.

I dont use measuring cups. theyre for noobs :p

sugar
papaya
milk
vanilla extract

start off with the sugar. pour enough sugar in the blender to cover the blades. its probably 1/4 cup of worth of sugar. Cut about 2-3 inches worth of the papaya fruit. peel it, cut it in 4 segments, throw it in the blender. pour enough milk to cover the papaya in the blender, add a cap full of the vanilla extract. blend @ hi speed and enjoy. I usually leave the papaya in the fridge prior to making the shake. so that way its chilled to drink. if you dont want to wait for the papaya to chill, throw in 6 ice cubes the mix.

the first time i made that, I drank 4...thats right 4 blender containers worth of that shake. It was that good. I had to sit down for an hour because I was about to throw it up.

I love Paula Dean to death but if any of her recipes overloaded with sugar and or butter come within 1000 ft of me I am officially required to take evasive action.

how do keep home-made shakes from immediately 'separating'?

You need a good blender, home made milk shakes are usually fail because I don't know anyone with a blender good enough to make a shake that stays together. You don't need a Blendtec, but making one in a $30 Walmart special will be fail every time.

My favorite recipe for a GREAT ice cream shake:

3 to 4 parts vanilla ice cream
1 part root beer

blend or mix until it comes to the consistency of a thick shake (kinda like a malt).

Unbelievable!

regardless of what you put it in it, make sure one of the ingredients is an entire stick of butter.

Yum.
