Help me identify this (short?) story...

So yeah, I've got this idea of a short story in my head. I can barely remember anything about it, except for the fact that I really enjoyed it, can't remember its name, can't remember the author, and... yeah.

So there's a way to travel, right? You go through an alternate dimension. However, whatever is in that alternate dimension drives people crazy. So people have to be knocked out in order to do it.

If memory serves, they tried it on a rat (rabbit?); when it came back, it sniffed around for a bit and died at the first sign of sensory input.

They tried it on a convicted criminal, and he went batshit insane too. His hair turns all white, talking crazy talk, etc.

So in the story, there's a family who's using the travel method (I think it was called jaunting), and the kid wants to find out what's on the other side. So he fakes taking whatever drug is supposed to knock you out and, when they arrive (to Mars maybe?), the kid's hair is all white, he looks like he's aged, and he's saying something along the lines of "They didn't want me to see, but I saw!"

So, ATOT... sound familiar?

Thank you. I mentioned it to a co-worker of mine, and we were both sitting there talking about how familiar it was and how we should know who it was.

Not familiar to me. Should I read it?

I think his short stories are some of his best work. I'm not a fan though... (and tellingly I've never read dark tower)...
