I think its of Russian origin, but google and the Russian fairy story wiki gave me nothing. The story features a young boy who goes to market and on the way, is told to buy the ugliest horse in the market and save the money. The man who tells him this gives him three beans(?) and tells him to feed the horse the beans.

When the boy gets back, his dad beats him for getting an ugly horse, but the boy feeds the horse the beans and the horse becomes really beautiful...and then I think he gets kicked out of the horse, and then rides a horse that sprouts wings and he rescues a princess.

I read it in this book of relatively more obscure and kinda bizarre fairy tales meant for children, but still pretty dark. I wish I remembered what it--and the fairy tale I'm thinking of in it--was titled.

What was he doing inside the horse?

Sounds like a lame Communist knock-off hybrid of Jack and the Beanstalk and The Sleeping Beauty. That country hasn't produced an inkling of inspired art.
