Help me How to setup premier6 to compress DivX mpeg4 compression from avi uncompressed.

a long time ago b4 my 2 hard drives from IBM died (120 gig total (( I had somehow had a choice of compressions and one was mpeg4 now since I reinstalled Premiere into my new Hard drive I do not see that compression choice.
I have installed the DivX pack but do not know how to make it appear as a choice in premiere nor how to get MPG4 as a choice.
what I want to do is to eventually make a cd with compressed MPG4 files.
so far what I had to do is get a different Internet program to compress the file into mpeg1. what do I need to do to make Premiere do the compressions and with MPG4?

TungFree,
I don't have any experience with Premier (I use Xmpeg from http://www.mp3guest.com/Xmpeg_Index.asp?l=US.) I have been playing around with the codecs a lot lately and I had a problem where the Divx encoder codec was not showing up. So, here is what I did. I went and downloaded divx 3.11 alpha with the patches, the newest lame acm, and then the new Divx 4.12 codec. First I installed divx 3.11 alpha after applying the patches. The the lame acm. Last the Divx 4.12 codec, but when I was installing this at the option where it asks you if you want the 4.x decoder to handle all 3.x media I chose no. Then I rebooted to make sure Windows would detect the codecs and everything works fine! Hope this helps a little even though I don't know anything about Premier. :)

peace,

Jimmyz,
thanks for the post :)
I have some questions:
1. did you patch the divx 3.11 alpha first (what is involved in patching steps if you would be so kind and is the lame acm part of the 3.11 alpha pack or do I need it from another source and is the patch in the lame acm or in the 3.11 alpha?) and then install the pack. Could you break it down into steps 1, 2 ,3, 4, .... etc ?
2. Did you trash the codec folder or uninstall the old one? I have installed the 4.12 already, do I install now the 3.11 alpha over it and then reinstall the 4.12 again or kill the codec folder and start from scratch?

TungFree,
Ok, here we go. First get all of the software:
http://www.divx-digest.tv/software/codec/divx_322b.zip <-- divx 3.11 alpha (patches already applied)
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/dawnload.cfm?software_id=350 <-- LAME ACM
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/dawnload.cfm?software_id=351 <-- LAMECOM

Don't worry about uninstalling anything, re-installing these codecs should fix the problems.

1. Extract divx_322b.zip to a temporary directory, go to that directory and run the executable named install.exe
2. Extract the LAMECOM package into a temporary directory, it'll create a directory named lame
3. Extract the LAME ACM package into the directory named lame
4. Go to that directory, there is a file named install.inf, right-click on the file and choose Install
5. Now go ahead and install Divx 4.12, but remember to click No when it asks if you want the 4.12 version to handle 3.xx divx media.
6. Then restart your computer and you should be able to encode in either DivX 4.12 or DivX MPEG-4 Video (divx 3.11 alpha +patches) and you should also be able to use the LAME MP3 Encoder ACM.

Sorry for not responding as quickly as I should have, but I don't check the forums everyday. If you need anymore help you can reach me at (remove the nospam and replace with hotmail) jimmyz_@nospam.com

peace,

when installing divx_322b namely "install.exe" a requester appeared warning for me not to continue as it may destabalize windowsXP now or in the future and sent me to read the following:

Warning

Microsoft strongly recommends you only use device drivers with the Designed for Microsoft Windows XP logo. Installing device drivers that have not been digitally-signed by Microsoft may disable the system, allow viruses onto your computer, or otherwise impair the correct operation of your computer either immediately or in the future.

Do you have WindowsXP? 2 of the links were forbidden but I was able to get them from a french site for LameACM090d.zip and lamecom.zip so now I have all three but please advise waht to do about the *stop Instalation* warning explained above

TungFree, I think MS just doesn't like like the idea of you installing that hacked MS codec, it'll give you the same warning anytime you try to install a driver or system file that hasn't been digitally signed, I don't think thats ever going to happen in this case!

It works fine in XP.

TungFree,
Even though I don't have Windows XP (and probably never will) I'll have to agree with rbV5. Windows is just complaining that the codec you are trying to install was not digitally signed which means that it could corrupt your software or hardware and may be a security risk, in this case it is neither. I heard a rumor when the XP release clients were going around that XP would not accept anything but drivers, codecs, etc. that were digitally signed by the authors and if your hardware was outdated you would have to get new hardware... I am happy to hear that these rumors were not valid. But yeah, go ahead and install the codec, it will not corrupt your system, but I can't guarantee that, so whatever you do is at your own risk and you can't blame me. ;)

good luck,

I have 2 problems.

1. I installed all 3 files and redid it again after it did not show up in Premiere 6 and finally I reinstalled the DivX412Codec.exe also still The option to compress the uncompressed avi file to MGEG4 is not one of the options on the menue when I try to export the file. I switch in the settings from General to video and I still see no MGEG4 choice

in Video
NTSC
I have the following choices:
Square pixels (1.0)
D1/DV NTSC (0.9)
D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 16.9 (1.2)
D1/DV PAL (1.067)
D1/DV PAL Widescreen 16.9 (1.422)
Anamorphic 2.1 (2.0)
D4/D16 Standard (0.948)
D4/D16 Anamorphic 8.3 (1.896)

I selected D4/D16 Standard (0.948) but it or any of the NTSC options do not compress the file.

Why am I not seeing the MPEG4 as a choice I kbow b4 I lost my hard drives it was there and I recall I installed a package of DivX4 files with only a single Install file then.

scratching my head.

2. Another mystory is that b4 I edited out the last portion of an uncompressed file that I did not want I was able to load the file into TMPGEnc.exe and compress it into mpeg1
because Premiere did not let me do MPEG4. Now after I did the following, it no longer loads sais it is not compatable:

Imported a clip marked the begining and end of it with in and out and I then went to the In place and selected Razor at in then selected the unwanted clip portion and cut it
I then selected in at the beginning of the file and out at the new end and then exported it uncompressed. the file runs fine and I can see it in my player but TMPGEnc.exe cannot open it anymore to compress it a requester sais the file cannot open or is unsupported. so either I did not edit it correctly or the new files for DivX changed something but I can still load any unedited uncompressed file and compres it with TMPGEnc.exe just not the one I edited and expoted.

Oreo is likely correct, check this:

Project>project settings>general>make sure "video for windows" is selected for the editing mode.> Now pick "video" in the drop down list instead of "general"> under "compressor, you should see a variety of different compression codecs.

It looks like you are in DV editing mode.

As for problem #2, import your clip back into premiere and check the file properties, I'll bet you compressed it to DV NTSC or another format your program doesn't support.

Nice to see you again as well Tungfree!

Yes partly the problem as what Oreo said but there was one more problem I finally found :))

I did not have it on Microsoft AVI I had it on Microsoft DV avi so in Microsoft DV avi ithe cimpressions were not showing up as a choice in exporting action only in the projest menu, si I did a try and see and replaced Microdoft DV avi with microsoft avi and now it compressed the file in DixX codec 4.12
:))
finally I see why I had it in Microsoft DV avi becaise I captured with firewire from a DV video cam corder so assumed it has to be DV in there. *Big Sigh*

anyone know what the difference is in MPEG4 comprssion and DivX 4.12 codec ? the divX 4.12 codec compressed the file 10 times the mpeg1 compressor stand alone (not in premiere 6)
I still have to test and see if rbV5 you are right about the fact I compressed the file into NTSC, maybe, but how can I edit a timeline by cutting off the tail of it and exporting it as it was in uncompresed avi so I can load it into the mpeg1 compressor which is a lot smaller than DivX 4.12 codec has doen and not ny vissable difference in quality.
also what codec can I use in premiere that will do what the mpeg1 compressor stand alone does for me so I can just use premiere 6?

Interesting, I am able to load the DivX 4.12 cimpressed file into the stand alone TMPGEnc.exe program and compress it into 1/2 the size not as good as the original I made with the TMPGEnc.exe from uncompressed avi but I had to edit out the end of the file and have no idea how to save it from timeline edited and in uncompressed avi so I can use TMPGEnc.exe for now to getr same size file but clearer the clarity or 1/2 size of SivX 4.12 compressed by yet agaain TMPGEnc.exeis somwhatt muddy not impossible but muddy and blurred.

rbV6,

>>As for problem #2, import your clip back into premiere and check the file properties, I'll bet you compressed it to DV NTSC or another format your program doesn't support.>>

I will check for the DV NTSC compression (I think you are right as it did not recognize it and now it recognizes DivX 4.12,) forgot to do it but how can I not compress it into anything but just leave it uncompressed and export or save it edited from the timeline after I remove the unwanted part fro it?

ok I checked it and it reads as follows:
File Path: D:\CaaptureVideo\New_Downstairs2.avi
File Size: 960.13MB bytes
Total Duration: 0;04;25;21
Average Data Rate: 3.61MB per second
Image Size: 720 x 480
Pixel Depth: 24 bits
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.896
Frame Rate: 29.97 fps

Audio: 48000 Hz - 16 bit - Stereo

AVI File details:
Contains 1 video track(s) and 1 audio track(s).

Video track 1:
Total duration is 0;04;25;21
Size is 911.29MB bytes (average frame = 123.44KB bytes)
There are 7963 keyframes.
Frame rate is 29.97 fps
Frame size is 720 x 480
Depth is 24 bits.
Compressor: 'dvsd'

and at the botom (above :) ) it sais Compressor: 'dvsd'

I Figured it out, I selected Microsoft video 1 which gave me no compression and I exported the edited file out. Then I compressed it with DivX MPG4 and got a 100kb file I then did a DivX 4.12 and got a 90 kb file I then was able to do a Mpeg1 with TMPGEnc.exe and got 42 kb.
I find the mpeg1 files good enough in 1/4 or 1/2 screen a t full screen it was fuzzy but the MPEG4 and divx 4.12 both were fine at full screen. so if I send a cd I will make them Divx 4.12 and for internet sending to ppl mpeg1 is ok. so the reason the files were not being taken in by TMPGEnc.exe program is that they were compressed in a wrong compression now all is fixed :))

Thank you one and all Jimmy (Jimmy thanks for expanding and listing and giving me tyhe links) Oreo thanks for the hint, and rbV5 knows me enough to spell it out for me and you have cleared it up enough so I could find one additional difficulty so I am including myself as a helper to me to ROTFL

I'm at work for a couple more days. If there is any interest, I would be willing to create a Radeon Video capture guide or FAQ that maybe helpful for interested folks from what I've learned over the years, specifically concerning the last year I've been playing with my Radeon card's. What do you think?

rbV5 I personally would love it especially since yoou have steared me to winXP and it is quiote a mistery still to me I am verry gradually learning to make changes. the Radion card has become popular and I would not be surprised if it was because of your input in the treads here (rumors travel a lomg way) rbV5 you are always detaied and compartamentalized and a fine fine teacher I woud be verry excited to see your findings as for anyone els... if they are smart they will too.

If you have the time and the inspiration I would love it.
