Help me get started with Counterstrike

I'm always hearing how awesome half-life and counterstrike are, especially when played online. I went to walmart last night to pick up a copy but they had 4 different half lifes? What one exactly do I need to buy to get started? I also heard that you can legally download counter strike for free if you own half-life. Is this true?

U need a copy of either HL or CS to play online. You must have a unique serial key also.

You can buy HL and then download CS for free - which is what I would recommend.

You will need to update all of the software titles to play online anyway - so you might as well get the standalone game in the first place 🙂

HL was a great game in the day 😀 - still is even now!
 
Well, Lessee, there was probably Game of the Year edition, Platinum edition, CS Retail, Blue Shift and Opposing Force... you'll want game of the year edition. 🙂
 
Just need the regular half life. All the mods are free for download. Get the "Game of the Year Edition."

Don't forget to download Day of Defeat as well. I like it better than Counter Strike. WWII based mod.
