Here's what I've got:

Soltek SL-75DRV (KT266)
Crucial PC2100 256meg
Athlon 1000 (266 AXIA)
Volcano III
Radeon LE
Quantum AS 40 gig
Plextor 8x4x32x
AOpen 6x DVD
SB Live (Not installed)
Windows 2000 Pro (SP2)

---
I've installed the latest BIOS flashes as well as the newest 4in1's. The computer will freeze when it gets in certain situations - I'm just about to frag someone in UT, I'm trying to make the last track of any given CD into an MP3 (with CDEX) or any track of some certain CDs.

The computer freezes hard - no mouse movement, no anything till I restart.

Sounds like component incompatiablity somewhere.

Take everything out, and start with bare essentials.

Cpu, Vid, Hd, Cd-Rom

Then test for awhile. Then add the sound card test for awhile, swap sound card out and test something else, then do both.

Also before doing this check to see if you have IRQ Problems

<<Cpu, Vid, Hd, Cd-Rom>>

Thats what I'm running right now.
I origonally had the SBLive installed, but thought that it might be causing the problem so pulled it, uninstalled its drivers, and deleted its registry keys as best I could.

Another oddity is that I can't figure out how to get my CD drives to work in DMA and not PIO4 - I had no problems with this in my last system (VIA Slot 1 motherboard).

my friend had problems with SP2 also try setting your AGP driving values to FA (if you can do this) also there is a Microsoft AGP fix for athlon based systems here link(I don't know if this will fix probs with RADEONs but it worked for my GF2).

if that doesnt work make sure you disable fast rewrites in ur bios and agp 4x. Hope this helps.

SORRY I DIDNT READ THE ORIGINAL POST FULLY

What version of 4 in 1's did you install? Don't say latest say the number and whether it was offical via drivers or betas...

what are your agp settings as well...

Are you ocing that radeon ? with what, radtweak or powerstrip? Did you reg tweak it or flash it to retail ati ddr?

What version of radeon drivers are you using?

I had problems until I tried another set of drivers for the card then no issues...

Are the issues only arising in game play not any other type of situation?

edit: I just reread the part about the mp3 and cd tracks...sounds like the via bug possibly...it doesn't have to be related only to when using a sblive card...the dma issue should have just made you have a underrun error but not hose up system.

Have you done a reformat since removing sblive just in case everything wasn't removed?

I think your DVD is PIO4 and it will force anything else on its channel to run at that speed as well. Perhaps you had a different config in your old system... Just an idea, i may be wrong

To clarify, I've tried using both the 4.31's and the 4.32's (available from Soltek's website), and have had the problem with both sets. I've applied that registry modification, as well as changing from AGP4x to AGP2x.

My Radeon is not overclocked - I've tried using both the 5.13.01.3102, and 5.13.01.3211 drivers.

I think I may have found out what the problem is - my event viewer lists the following error (numerous times, I guessing from each time I restart):

The PfModNT service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

Any ideas how to fix that?

-- and no, my DVD is not PIO4 native - it is DMA. To be sure, I've now disconnected it, and still can't get my Plextor into DMA mode.

Hey NM
Pfmodnt is a part of Liveware from CL
You could reinstall Liveware and then try to uninstall it completely and if it's still there then you need to hunt down where it's loading from (most likely the registry)

Found this to try:

You can go to Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Services, then Properties|General for pfmodnt, then set
it's Startup Type to "Disabled" or navigate to
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
and delete the key for "pfmodnt".

Hope this helps!

temps seem a little warm... nothing ouch hot, but warm for a gig(with a vol3)

have old is the install? did you reinstall for the KT266 upgrade?

Hmm, if you get desperate try to reinstall Win2k With ACPI disabled. That fixed problems for me, but your CPU may hotter and you would need to enable APM

I had the same problem with my old system and
in that case it was the memory that was broken.

1 memory chip was broken.

It was fine for some time and then I was writing
a cd or playing some game and then *búmm* it was dead...

Replaced the broken chip and after that no problems 😉

Hrmm. I'm able to overclock to 9.5x133 at 1.70V still (I haven't tried higher yet), and have yet to have any problems. Does this make any sense?
