Help me get mother in law off my back

What wireless router will give the best range for both G & B networks?
The mother in law has a linksys WRT54GS and the unit just keeps dropping out all the time, and I am sick and tired of being her tec sup, every time it drops out I have to hear about it.
Going to replace it with unit that keeps good signal.

If The GS is dropping, I doubt that another Router would work.

You need to resort to other means.

The best Method to Extend Wireless Coverage depends heavily on the Specific Environment.

some of the more common causes of dropped connection are interference. mostly from cordless phones.

2 options i can think of

1) try belkin. they generally have better range and are more stable IMHO
2) convert to a mimo or preN wireless network - better range faster speeds

Sorry, but when some one is already running GS it is the wrong approach to buy by trial and error more expensive Hardware with the hope that might generate few % more (if at all) and would change the outcome.

If the signal is killed buy the environment, you should find what is killing it. Otherwise, ?play? Hardware location, or do WDS, or additional Access Point.

i have yet to find a linksys router that did not give me some sort of problem, and need reboots at various times.
So Yes, I do think it is worthwhile to dump it and try another

You haven't mentioned whether the problem seems to be RANGE or a general connection problem. Does the same thing happen if the attached PCs are five feet from the Linksys? What sort of signal strength are you seeing?

The solution to the problem will be different, depending on what the problem really is.

If RANGE is the problem, many people don't realize that they can often MOVE their modem and/or their router to a more-central location. As long as there's a phone jack or a cable TV jack, or the possibility of running a single Ethernet cable, a router move is usually possible. There are, of course, other range solutions, too.

Totally agree that the GS is a very solid unit, may client of ours have had good experience with it. Try placing the router higher if possible which sometimes can help signal strength.

Or try grabbing a Cisco wireless AP off eBay Mine never dropped a signal being on 24x7 for 6 months now.

with any wireless gear the first step in solving coverage is to set the AP to channel 1, 6 or 11.

This solves 95% of any "coverage" or interferrance issues. AFAIK all SOHO gear is the same power levels so one shouldn't be any stronger than the other.

The common Prime Directive is, ?When it is Not working, why should I want/care to understand why. I just Trash the manufacturer and suggest buying something else.:thumbsdown:

Of course in time All Brands are Trashed (search the forum No Brand is escaping major Trashing). Then What?:shocked:

yeah, it does get a little old from time to time. Just blame the manufacturer for releasing such a "crappy" product when most always it is user error.

and to be a "brand whore" picking up a used cisco 350 AP will provide about the most coverage you can get within FCC limits.
