Sharp? You need aperture grille as shadow masks are grainy. $400 not even in that ball park.. The SONY E540 21 is around $550.

Your choices are Viewsonic P line, Sony FD, or NEC dimondtron.

PS- I would never buy a 21" the price/performance sucks. 2 more inches than 19" for double the price? Think about that too.

ok yeah good 21" are too expensive. I edited the op to say 19".

a lot of you are raving about aperture grill. why? I said sharpest, and isn't ap grill terrible for sharpness? by that I mean small text and pixels are very accurate and sharp at high resolutions.

Actually the shadow mask is the sharpest. It provides better picture at .20mm and better geometry. the only thing that was ever said where the aperature was better at was brightness, but new technology makes them very similar.

But Viewsonic says the most descriminating users will like their P series that are equipt with aperature grille. Ah who knows. Just look for reviews.

It's immposisble. A shadow mask has millions of holes in it's grill, between those holes are "dead" spots also known as grainyness, therefore it's impossible to have a sharp image. AG does'nt have this problem.

The one Excelsior recommends is last years DP930. I have a hitachi brandnew cm721f, considered best shadowmask, I'll sell you for 200 and you pay shipping....otherwise it's at newegg where I bought it for 245. But why waste your money? Get the NEC.

It is? Well, its the same thing as the Dp930 from Mitsu. I saw they discontinued it.

What do you expect? It's a very expensive 19" when others can be had for as low as $150!! And most people spending 300+ are buying LCD's today for wow factor. I have a LCD, Samsung 191T, and this blows it away. But it's HUGE!

Go to NEC and click on "professional cad and graphics" and all you'll see is their DP CRT's...No Shadow masks, and no LCDs even though they make the best of those too...IMO. They know better though than to recommend to professional users LCDs or SM crts.

Go to any maker, Sony, Viewsonic and click though to "professional" use and all will be AG CRT's..again no SM and no LCD's.

Like I say, it's expensive, big, very heavy, but there are 8 outstanding reviews at newegg...

I hav'nt seen a 19" sony since they don't make but IMO this is the best monitor I've seen 19" and I've looked a lot... even own two I thought were good but later not so happy(CTX-PR960F (sony FD inside) and Hitachi cm721F(POS shadow mask)).
