I'm a large guy who hates to hear my computers when I'm not gaming.
I have two computers, one for gaming and one for media serving. The Gaming PC is in an Antec P180 and the Server is in a Silverstone Temjin T07. They are actually pretty quiet, but I hate hearing anything when I'm reading on the couch. I don't want to have to go to my bedroom for this everytime and my office is in the living room. I want to place these in well ventilated cabinets, hpoing this will be the final silencing step. I also would like to have a wide space in front of me when sitting at the desk for paperwork. I currently have a 6' x 3' desk made of leftover tabletop and some IKEA legs. This is almost perfect except for the noise.

I would be willing to go all DIY on a project, but my creativity is limited. Let's just say I need a picture to start with.

Your best solution for sound reduction is to silence the systems themselfs. Putting them in a cabinate that will keep the sound down will also mean drasticly restricting the airflow to and from the systems. But overall the siplest solution would be to just turn the systems off. Obviously nto an option you want to consider right?

Actually I do turn them off/put them to sleep. It's just inconvenient. I've thought more about it. I can probably do more to silence the server so that's step one. Then I will tackle the monster. THEN I will build the ultimate desk!

Well for the desk you will want some sound reduction foam. You know the spiked kind lining the inside of the box. For the air flow into and out of the box you'll want to baffle it. Create and intake and exhaust chamberwhere there air has plenty of room to move but has to snake its way around sound dampening bariers.

Consider also other alternatives:

1. Noise cancelling headphones.

2. Put the server in a closet or another room and go wireless.
