Where are some places that sell surplus m1's. Surplus, or new ones off of the old specs. Just want an m1! Know a lot about surplus guns and modern guns so no lectures please.

CMP, no other choice. You get it pulled straight from a US arsenal, untouched for up to 60 years. You know when you get it that it's 100% USGI and has been headspaced.

No telling what you will get buying on the free market, plus you'll be paying almost double the price of a CMP Garand. Sure it can take a bit of work to clean up :)

If you decide not to go the CMP route (have to shoot 50 rounds in a CMP sanctioned match to qualify (it's not difficult at all, almost any shooting club qualifies)) and buy on the open market, stay away from Blue Sky imports. Most easily noted because the barrel will be import marked and say Blue Sky and the barrel will also have Arlington on it (this is when you pull the operatiing rod back). These are Korean imports. Nothing wrong with them, they just aren't the same as a "real" Garand. In no way are they worth over $400

Same goes for Century Arms Garands which are built on the Century receivers. Just not a good deal, worse than Blue Sky IMO. I personally don't think getting a new Springfield Garand is worth it (not to be confused with the Springfield Armory which originally made them).

Here's how my M1903A3 CMP cleaned up

Here's what it looked like out of the box and stripped

And here's a CMP Garand cleaned up:

That M1 wasn't too greasy. It's a Springfield, dated 1942 :D

Have some others, not cleaned up yet :(

Civilian Marksmanship Program

Created by Congress to train civilians in rifle usage and sales. Now it runs on it's own funds which it mainly gets from rifle sales. The Army is required to give all M1s found in storage to the CMP. Ocassionally the CMP gets something new. They found M1903s and A3s for a while. Some M44 training rifles. Even M1917s a couple of months ago.

Currently they are trying to work with Congress to get M1 Carbines (currently only availible to Junior groups, not individuals) and also trying to get modified REAL M14s which are impossible to modify to automatics (which they currently are).

The latter would be a huge step, as the current rule by the BATFE is that "once a machinegun, always a machinegun". If the CMP could get Congress to do it, it may provide hope on reversing that stance and allow the sale of other modified pieces of history.

The CMP also subsidizes (sp?) sales of AR15s, but the prices aren't that great. The Bushmaster CMP AR15 is extremely nice though.

CMP was attempting to obtain M14s in 1980 when I joined the Army. There was also an interesting technical article authored by an active duty Army officer back then about how easily the transfer of M14s to the public could be facilitated. If I remember correctly, the article indicated that some M14s were being decommissioned at the time with blowtorches.

You are correct about the Blue Sky M1 Garands. I purchased one for $87 plus tax back in 1989 from a gun shop in Kentucky. The rifle had been refinished, and to me was horrible compared to the M1 which I obtained through CMP on Fort Campbell. The Blue Sky rifle ended up eventually as a gift to my brother. He still has it.

Hey Munchies: Watch out for "Garand Thumb" ;)

Did you read about that guy who bought a old M1 from them, and when he was cleaning it he found his NAME under the butplate?

Turns out he got the same rifle he had carried in Korea!

What's the ODDS??!!!

BTW : I would LOVE to get my hands on a M14, best rifle I ever fired. I trained with one in USMC boot camp then in ITR they gave us M16's P.O.S.'s
Though I'm sure the newer one's aren't as bad.

Insane, never seen it before. What are the freaking odds.

I see over on the boards where guys take Garands up to dying veterans in hospitals :( Give them a look at what saved their lives, and defended our freedoms.

There is a big petition on the M14 right now to help pay for the Iraq war thing. Estimated 300K of M14s are to be scrapped. If sold it could raise 300-600Mil.

Also keep in mind what ammo you shoot. You won't want commercial ammo, primers are too soft for "safe" shooting. It'd really be fine, but it's expensive. And that AP on clips, you'll need to check the location and date on the bottom to see if it is corrosive or not. I had a whole box of Lake City (LC) ammo from 1942, all corrosive :(

I'd rather not have to worry about cleaning corrosive ammo out of a Garand.

I have it on good authority that some new (well, not really new) Garands should be available from the CMP in the next few months. A bunch of returns from Greece. Maybe a few 03s also.
