Help me find a new laptop

I am looking to buy a new laptop. I am a fairly mobile person and would like to be able to hit the road with my data and a decent laptop in tote. Feature wise I'm looking for something with a DVD, and preferable CD-RW. Integrated NIC/Modem would be nice as well, as keeping track of dongles and not breaking them is tough sometimes. I am looking for as low profile as possible, as I am willing to give up a little hardware speed for portability.

Can anyone recommend a good model, and a place to buy it if not recommending Dell/Gateway equipment.

Thanks,
Jason

I would take a look at the IBM's, either T or X model. Compaq have the EVO 600, which is quite nice. Fujitsu-Siemens S series, I think it is. Alsto try and read the reviews at zdnet.com. But Dells are a bit bulky and not really good looking.

on the contrary, dell offers small laptops like most other companies.

Dell does seem to be a bit more bulky judging by the specs, but I would still consider them. Does anyone have experience with the new Gateway laptops? They look sharp and are fairly small yet quite powerful.

Also, how about 'whitebox' laptops like the ones available at mwave.com?

Thanks,
Jason

Off coursse they do, but I would still prefer an IBM or a Compaq EVO 600. But that's just my view.

I would only consider the big names if it were me. I have an old IBM R30, thats a good machine. And when you are looking for portability forget big bulky machines with 15".

You don't mention whether you are on budget or not.

Try and do a search on the forum and you will find plenty of answers.

I'm looking for the price to come in around $1500 if possible. Bulky is definately not on my list. An old pal of mine had a dell laptop, it was wicked fast, but damn huge. He basically ended up using it as a semi-portable desktop. I am leaning more towards portability as I would need to use it for work as well, for customer and location visits.

Thanks,
Jason

Hmmm well I did some shopping today. Hit up the local Best Buy as well as the Gateway Country. I was not impressed with ANY of the offerings at Best Buy. The compaqs, toshibas, hose brands, sony's, and HPs all had major flaws. Some were way to bulky/way to expesnive. Some had everything I wanted, but lacked a Serial port for god sakes. One of the primary uses for the laptop will be to lugging to remote locations to terminal into networking devices. I can't have a laptop I can't hook up to a router. So, not surprisingly, I walked out of Best Buy disgusted after a sales guy confronted me and when I told him nothing fit the bill he replied "nobody uses serial ports anymore". Well I do.

Anyways I popped over to Gateway country. They had a very nice 450X for $1499. It seemed very sturdy. Specs are as follows:
P4-M 2.0Ghz
256mb DDR
15" XGA
30GB HD
CDRW/DVD
32 Radeon Mobility

It came in a smaller skinnish, seemingly well constructed package. Had everything I needed include the requisite 1 serial port.

Has anyone used one of these new Gateway laptops? Quite frankly I was impressed, and the price is not bad either. I priced out a similar Dell and wound up at around $1650.

Thanks for the input guys!

Looks like the Fujitsu lacks a Serial port. Definately not what I'm looking for then.

I have a 600series notebook. I like it alot. The only thing that prevents it from getting a 10 in my book is the weight and the keyboard. Other than that, it's nice.

Cool. Nice to know someone had good luck with Gateway. I think the 450 is basically a skinnier 600 if I recall correctly. Smaller screen or something I believe. But other than that similar.

I have never seen a USB to serial converter, but after looking I did find them. However I can't vouch for them actually working. Also another dongle is an obnoxious thing to have, I'd perfer modem/lan/serial all to be intergrated. So even if I could get another laptop sans serial port and add one via USB, that would be points taken off in a competition to see which one I buy. I want portability as I don't want the machine I get to be a hassle to bring around, or I know I won't use it as much as I should. Dongles are obnoxious.

Looking at those apples.

I dont' want to spend $1800 on something with a 12in screen.
I also don't want to spedn $3000+ on _any_ laptop. I just don't have that kinda budget for this one.
