My wife and I did the B.V.I. (virgin gorda, tortola, anegada) for our honeymoon.

We went to the Dominican Republic (Punta Cana) for our anniversary. Both places are nice. The Dominican is great for all inclusives. The V.I. or B.V.I. are better if you are not interested in an all inclusive atmosphere.

Anegada had to be my favorite island, but it's a bit pricey getting there. And once there, it's just you, the beach and some booze. Very, very quiet.

So go there.
Ignore the state department.
Makes no difference to me.

I went to Kauai on my Honeymoon last September. The weather was great and the island was better than Oahu IMHO. (less people and more secluded)

Hawaii isn't known for its beaches. The islands mostly have coral around them and rip currents can be problematic depending on season. But there are some beaches there. Check out

If you have an option, don't go on your honeymoon right after you get married. Wait a few days and plan it a week after. When you get married, there will likely be a lot of family around and with all of what goes on, we found it helpful to wait a week and half before we flew out. I think we enjoyed the vacation part more because we were a lot more relaxed.

Stay away from mexico.
The state department is extending its warning to americans traveling there.

Seems the problem with american tourist being kidnapped is on the rise again.

got a link? I felt perfectly safe in Cancun. granted that was 3 yrs ago

Sounds a bit too risky to me.
In recent years, dozens of U.S. citizens have been kidnapped in Mexico and many cases remain unresolved. Moreover, new cases of disappearances and kidnap-for-ransom continue to be reported. No one can be considered immune from kidnapping on the basis of occupation, nationality, or other factors. Criminals have been known to follow and harass U.S. citizens traveling in their vehicles, particularly in border areas including Nuevo Laredo, Matamoros, and Tijuana. U.S. citizens who believe they are being followed should notify Mexican officials as soon as possible. U.S. citizens should make every attempt to travel on main roads during daylight hours, particularly the toll (?cuota?) roads, which are generally more secure. It is preferable for U.S. citizens to stay in well-known tourist destinations and tourist areas of the cities with more adequate security, and provide an itinerary to a friend or family member not traveling with them. U.S. citizens should avoid traveling alone as a means to better ensure their safety. Refrain from displaying expensive-looking jewelry, large amounts of money, or other valuable items.

i went there cancun in july and never once felt unsafe.

Honeymoon Beach on St. John. THE nicest beach I have been to... nicer than Hapuna Beach in Hawaii.
There are two hotels on St. John... the Westin and Caneel Bay. Westin is the cheaper of the two. Either one I would love to go for my honeymoon!

Look at my photos in my sig. The nicest ones of a beach are there.

I highly recommend Maui (stay away from Oahu, it's just a concrete jungle, doesn't feel Hawaiian). It's well within your price range. Stay in Ka'anapali, one of the best beaches in the world. if you want a condo, The Whaler, get a studio. It's right on the beach, right next to great shopping and culture, 5 minutes from Lahaina to go bar hopping, snorkeling right there at Black Rock, and max 10 minutes away from 5+ more great beaches and snorkeling spots (Honolua Bay).

The Caribbean would be in hurricane season, that would suck to be hit by storms on one of your most important vancations..... Don't take the risk. Hawaii is rarely hit by storms.

This is where my fiance and I prefer to vacation. We are staying a little closer to Honolua bay (Napili beach to be specific) for two weeks in the beginning of January. The surf at Honolua bay is world class, and the snorkeling is out of this world too. The only reason I didnt recommend Maui is that it is expensive.

That's mostly the border towns and Mexico City. I've been living here for a dozen years and like the advisory says, the tourist towns and areas are relatively safe. No more dangerous than anywhere else in the world.

they could stay in the Kahana area for a little cheaper, and still be a little under the $3500 range. if it's the end of August, the flights become cheaper (kids go back to school).
