I'll be starting a new job next week, about 30 miles away. Since the WRX I wanted won't be practical as a daily driver, I figured I'd get a 2005 Civic LX Coupe (5-speed, of course). It's cheap (~$13.5k+ttl), reliable, and economical. Problem is, I can't find any locally.. :(

I'd appreciate it if you guys could click this link, type your zip code in and check the inventory of one or two dealers to see if they have any (especially in the tri-state area)...I found one 5-speed sedan (ugh), and a couple of automatics so far...

Yeah ,considering you have snowy winters and a fair ways to go seems like a good idea to me?

Civic is perfectly practical for a couple reasons. Cheaper is much better for a car that's going to be significantly depreciated from a daily commute like that. Gas mileage in the thirties will help weather the next gas crunch a little more easily. Finally, for winter driving, front wheel drive, especially with 4 snow tires, is just fine for the majority who don't live on a hill or a mountain.

As for finding one, you might have to wait, choose a DX, EX, or a sedan, or pay a little extra for them to bring you a car from a different dealership. Ask them to run a "locate" search for you--they usually check your state, and several neighboring states.

Whatever you do, don't settle for the automatic. It's a much different feeling drivetrain from the stick--despite the 5 forward ratios, it's not calibrated for fun.

Personally, I'd have them locate one and agree to pay about $300 extra (if it's from a different area, not if it's only accross town), but if they can't find one, I'd just wait until late December or January. There will be an adequate supply of almost any Civic imaginable then (except the Si, which will have just been released). It's also the slow time of year for car sales, so you'll get a better price.

60 miles a day isn't very far, pretty much the norm, so the miles really don't matter and worse case possible thats 4 gallons of gas for the WRX as opossed to 2 a day for the civic. Civic is cheaper to buy though.

Yeah if he did 360 miles a week thats 19 a year which means in 10 yrs the car would have a 200 thousand miles miles or so. . .

the wrx is a god damn practical car to drive. It has 4 doors, a trunk, and 4wd to keep you from sliding all over the place and offers you lots and lots of fun on the snow and perhaps pavement.

i dont' get how unpractical the wrx is.

Don't get me wrong, I plan to buy a WRX soon...thing is, it'll be my "baby" so I don't want to put too many miles on it. Sounds silly, but I don't want to have to take the WRX to malls, supermarkets, etc only to get dented by fat people.

and that's like, 1/5 of the cars on the road. I wouldn't really say have to have premium is unpractical.
