Help me enjoy rap

Pray To Jesus

Diamond Member
I enjoy rap when I understand it but mostly I don't like it because I'm not ghetto enough

so I would need you to go verse by verse through a good song or so like the paper on 99 Problems by Jay-Z for example

any takers?

imho one of the craziest ever written's the 2nd verse of Chino-XL's Wordsmith. He's a Mensa member with a crazy vocabulary so as long as you can keep up with his metaphors he's a great rapper to listen to.

Here's him performing the song A Capella

Why you cut school?
Cause you ain’t feel too good.
I cut school
cause my cuts ain’t heal too good
Through all the physical abuse
My mind escaped
through the gift of wordplay
I memorized encyclopaedias and dictionaries
I wrote anthems from antonyms
Harmonies from homonyms
Created cinema from synonyms
Was livid to eliminate
that illustrious life you’re livin’ in
Wrote rhetoricals in rhythms
I could paralyze with a parable
Made rhymes out of religion
Crucifix you with a prefix
Or suffocate you with a suffix
Wrote lectures so infectious
They’re known to infect the listeners
Who dissin’ us?
Yo punks you wait – I punctuate
My karma's like a comma
That put you inside of a coma
Hyphen, semi-colon, dot, dot
Leave you semi-swollen
Question Mark: You pregnant?
Oh you’re not? I love you, Period.
To sum it up, language is my essence
Fucked up in all my adolescence
Till my Mom’s was out of lessons
Laws, I store convenient
Still I rob a convenience store
Love Mom, Fuck Mom,
Shit, I don’t love me no more
Mentally it didn’t register, bitch
Empty the register, bitch
You just a cashier, bitch
Give the cash, here
Or I’ll shoot you in your cabbage
Hijack a getaway cab, bitch
Words ain’t makin’ me no loot
Don’t change no Dow Jones average
Regardless, we’re Godless
They stole my innocence
In a sense, the judge sentenced me
To 3 lifetimes sentences
To put my life in times and sentences
Art my dark archnemesis
They want me off the premises
That’s what the premise is
Locked on a tier
where you can’t shed a tear at
I studied more Shakespeare
Than any African can shake a spear at
And the whole world fears that
And it hurts
I got caught killing time
But then I got away (a way) with words

I think Thug Story by Taylor Swift is probably one of the best Rap songs ever made. Her collaboration with BoB in Both of Us was also very good

I like the fusion between rap and talented music artists/music. It takes some quality producing to put them together right.

Those are just some pop hits that come to mind as easy examples. Most of the time I don't know who I'm listening to tho.

You have to be ghetto to like rap? 😵 Give this song a shot.

Atmosphere - The Waitress

A city full of people and my favorite is that waitress
And she treats me like some type of common vagrant
I see her everyday, but there's nothing to say
Unless I decide to step inside of that cafe
I only get to sit if I buy something to eat
Otherwise it's best to keep my feet moving down that street
And god damn she's a hard bitch
Talks at me like I'm the bad dog that got into the garbage
Yeah I know that the toilet is for customers
You ain't got to tangle up the strings to make this puppet work
It doesn't have to be a game of patty cake
But it ain't like you don't know I sleep in that alleyway
And by the way, I can see it in your eyes
You're angry with your life, not a stranger to the fight
I bet you hate every man that you date
And you're probably addicted to all types of escape
You take it out on me that you're all alone
When you know you got your own closet full of hollow bones
Watch the tone when you speak to old folks
I'm grown, just trying to get out of this Minnesota cold

Look lady, I'm homeless, I'm crazy
I'm so hopeless I'm suicidal daily
If you and I can't co-exist, let's fake it
Cause I ain't got the energy it takes for this relationship

I'm waiting for a city bus to flatten me
And transport me to the ever after happily
Maybe reincarnated with luck
Come back to Earth as a cockroach in your tip cup
She said she's had it up to here
She's gonna call authorities if I don't disappear
I love her threats, it rejuvenates my breath
I give her stress for the reaction that it gets
I got a pocket full of pan-handled money
On a cup of bad coffee and a stale honey bun
In front of everyone she calls me bum
But she notices my absence on them afternoons I don't come
So here I am, thorn in her hip
Holding down the corner table all morning with some corn chips
Ignoring the insults and evil eyes
I feed off of 'em, I wonder when she'll realize
That she's the only reason I visit
The only woman in my world that acknowledges my existence
And if my ship ever comes, I'll miss it
Because I'm getting old and I ain't got much left to give it
So there it is and I have to live with it
I had the chance to make a difference, but I didn't
In the cafe bathroom drinking free tap water
Thinking "Damn, I should've been a better father to my daughter"

I really like a lot of rap beats but generally can't stand the lyrics. Even in the OP, that guy is CLEARLY talented, but I just don't enjoy the self-serving songs most rappers write.

I tend to listen to more swing/jazz... It's the underpinnings of many modern rap beats without the ridiculous lyrics.

Try Deltron 3030.
It's refreshing and very good. Good text, nice beats, no ghetto and Del the Funky Homosapiens (rapper) have a great voice and flow.

Totally misread the thread title as "help me enjoy rape". Was gonna suggest more lube.

Now that I think about it tho, listening to rap kind of feels like having your ears raped.

Stop Raven, Poe boy.

once upon a weekend morning, on OT without a warning,
perknose busted out a Poe pome quote in order to look smart.
while i chuckled, smiling wryly, at his weak attempt that dryly
proved my place atop the OT pinnacles of pomeic art.
truly, i have found no equal to my grasp of pomeic art.
i can rhyme your world apart!

There once was a *** named brianmanahan
Of the poem she fancied herself a fan
But her rhymes were the worse
Out of her ass she couldn't pull a verse
And Perk really should institute a ban
