Rig 2 in my siggy has been acting up lately. This is a computer that has traveled a lot - Lanboy lightweight case and straps etc FYI. I threw out the old motherboard about 3 months ago and installed a new one (SIS mobo) because the old one was a bit flakey. The power supply was replaced a couple years ago with a Fortron, originally it was the Antec stock smartblue power supply.

A few weeks ago the computer when moved to a new location, would power up and a couple seconds would shut off. Sometime when you would plug the power chord in to the back it would just turn on without hitting the power up button on the front. Very weird.

So I figure maybe the Fortron power supply is going bad and can't handle the load anymore and just shuts off. I ordered a new power supply, nothing fancy, a Hipro - looks good and I installed it yesterday. It ran all night long with a 3D game left running, everything is great. No power offs. Looks to be fixed. Ran a good 18+ hours. So my daughter comes over and I moved the computer to her desk from where it was on the dining room table testing all night. As soon as I plugged it in and powered it up, it rand a few seconds and powered down again. All the previous symptoms returned. I pulled all plugs out, tried different mouse, keyboard and power chord, power strip. Same thing. One time when I pluge the power chord into the power supply, the computer powered up without me hitting the power button, as it has been doing sometimes lately, and then powers back down again after a few seconds.

I laid the computer on its side and it actually powered up and is running now. This is just wired. It appears maybe my old Fortron P/S was ok. About the only thing(s) left are the mother board (which is a few months old but I bought last year) or the case power button is flakey and needs replaced. Can I buy a power button separately? Can I use the reset button instead / in place of the power buttton if it is gone bad? Idea's?

Soundls like some connections/cables are comming loose. Worst case is that one of the connectors on the motherboard is loose in the board. It is possible that the solder joints holding one or more of the power cables are weak and causing problems.

i believe your issue lies with the mainboard.

i would unplug the machine, unplug the atx power cord, remove the cmos battery, wait five minutes, and plug everything back in and try again.

if thats a nogo, i would advise trying a new mainboard.

edit: after thinking about it again, i have repaired computers that had this same symptom with a new cpu as well. throw at it whatever you have thats a spare part.
