Help me diagnose my PC...

Frequent Lockups. (not heat related. can lock up in 30 seconds, can lock up after 2 hours)

Every time I boot, I get the following event log errors:

i8042prt -> Could not set the keyboard typematic rate and delay. Keyboard problems??

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation. This is a data drive, should not even be accessing on boot. (1 of the two Caviers) otherwise after boot, I can read and write to each drive no problem.

Also:
WD diagnostics insist the SMART is defective on all 4 of my drives. WD Code 0159, diagnostics version 11.

so I have to decide what to replace first... Mobo or all 4 hard drives...

I am thinking mobo, but want to know what you thinking....

Do you have access to another computer to test those hard drives in? Just seeing if you get any errors through boot on another computer would suffice. It sounds like the HDD controllers on the mobo though. And given the other problems as well, I don't see how it might be the hard drives themselves.

EDIT: Hold on a second. What PSU are you using to power all that?
Tas.

unfortunately i dont. this is the only one of my 3 computers with sata interface and sata drives. otherwise i would test them independently.

Sounds like a motherboard issue. Is this a new build, or have you had it a while and the problems started recently? If it's new, make sure none of the motherboard standoffs are out of place, and there are no loose screws under the motherboard, as it could be shorting the motherboard and can cause all kinds of strange problems. It's extrememly unlikely that 4 hard drives would be bad, and you are having the keyboard problem as well. Bad RAM can also cause hard drive corruption which could be causing some of your problems as well. What do you have for a power supply? If you have a weak 12v rail with all those compentents that use it, there is a chance that could be part of the problem as well.

Personally, I would test the hdd's one at a time using non-raid configuration. Make sure you partition each drive first and re-format and then re-install windows. After that try running the system for awhile to see if the lock ups still shows up. If the lock up goes away, try the other hdd. If problem doesn't show up, then try the SATA drives one at a time. It could be one of the drives is faulty and is causing the system lock ups because they are in RAID 0. Or you can try removing the SATA drives first to make sure it is not power related.

Power supply:

Antec TruePower TrueControl 550 550W Power Supply

Ok, so i ran this test... removed both SATA caviers (keeping just the boot array)
Still getting keyboard errors in event log. Still getting lockups.

Keep in mind, this systen worked well for over 1.5 years, until just last week.

new info. this morning when i turned on my computer the bios had completely reset to its defaults. i dont like this at all.

Did you build this system yourself? Check the motherboard and it's mounting to the backplate. Can you push down anywhere (test this with the computer off) and have the mobo touch the metal? Your PSU seems decent enough, so I'd check for grounds as well before replacing equipment.

Sounds like the motherboard is on it's way out. Might be lucky though, try replacing the CMOS battery, I'm not sure why that would cause that keyboard error, but it could sure screw up your hard drive configurations.

Is your the power around your place 'dirty'. A line conditioner may be needed. Even a good power supply might not be able to cope.

Can you look at the SMART values and see what is failing. Is the temperature too hot since it would screw up all 4 drives. Everest will give you the description of SMART counters instead of some obscure WD code.

Edit: Just thought that if your pc was fine for the last 1.5yrs, check the mobo caps.
