ok, so i basically can't decide whether i want a used ford escape hybrid or a rav4 sport.

the issue is money... and gas mileage...

help!

p.s. i checked and it turns out that the garage is for questions about automotive repair problems, not about buying a new car.
 
I faced that same decision back in 07. New Escape hybrid vs new RAV4. I went with the V6 RAV4, and while I regretted it at first, I'm really glad I did now. I have 36K miles on the RAV and it hasn't had a single problem. Runs great, drives great, and is really nice and zippy. It doesn't get the milage that the Escape does, but I think 34 mpg city isn't realistic, plus I do most of my driving on the highway.

Plus, I don't think I would trust a used hybrid. I would want to buy one new and get a long factory extended warrantee. Depending on the age of the used escape, you might be looking at replacing the battery pack at some point over the life of the vehicle, and that will run you several thousands of dollars.

the guy at the ford dealership said he'd give me an extended warranty for the used escape hybrid if i got it from there. any '08 or '09 is the escape hybrid i'd want. forget anything before that.

09 is basically new, and I would wonder why someone would sell an 08 after owning it 1-2 years. Do they have any used 08/09 in inventory? What year RAV are you comparing it to? Remember to try and compare across similar trim levels. The base escape hybrid trim is equivalent to the middle trim on the RAV (sport), more or less.

Ultimately I decided against the hybrid based on a total cost of ownership calculation performed over 5 years of vehicle life. With the miles I put on a car, I figured that after 5 years I would have 80K to 90K miles. I figured that the maintanence on the RAV (aside from tires) would be basically oil changes during that time period. The transmission is basically sealed and the manufacturers maintenance schedule does not include periodic transmission service. I think they have a coolant flush at 90K miles, and the first tune up at 120K miles. The hybrid was bound to have more and more costly maintence, including looking at replacing the battery pack at some point. After 5 years and 90K miles I speculated that I would have an easier time selling the RAV for more money than the Escape Hybrid. At the time, the cost was approximately the same between the RAV and the Escape, with the exception that at the time I would have qualified for a 3K tax rebate on the Escape.

Looking back on it, I probably would have been happy with the Escape during the first 5 years, probably longer. However, I am also very happy with the RAV. It is up to you, but when looking at cost, compare apples to apples and look at the maintenance costs on that hybrid.

because there's far more traffic in off-topic and the garage is for car repair threads. i want the opinion of common people who may have faced the same dilemma i faced and the probability of getting a response from more of those people is greater in ot than the garage.

i wrote a "p.s." about it in the op... maybe it'll help you to read the whole three sentences i wrote.

I voted Escape, I have a Rav4 Sport... it is a good choice too, but I have driven the Escape and it feels much nicer

Exactly. If you check there you'll find plenty of threads about buying new cars. However, I do understand if you're trying to avoid a certain poster in the garage. He can be a bit annoying and irrational.

Ford has borrowed exactly 0 dollars from the government. Reviews put Ford's quality on par with its competitors.
 
2010 Equinox if you can stomach what's going on with GM...

Ford Escape if you want to buy from the last American left out of the big 3.

(I no longer consider GM and Chrysler American car co's)
 
Have a good friend with a '08 ESCAPE Hybrid. Has been flawless and her FWD model is averaging about 33mpg.

I like the Mariner hybrid more than the Escape.
