Ive driven pretty much every VW engine out right now... And i can tell you one thing, the 1.8t is GEORGOUS (see sig below). Due to the long commute, it might not be the most economical choice, but it you wanna have a good time driving it, definately go for the 1.8t 🙂

"neither, thats too much money for a car."

That's exactly what I was thinking. I was surprised no one said it much earlier. My first impression was, 'oh man! This guy is rich!'. [Original poster:] Is your name Richard by any chance? 😱 Hehehe! 😀

GTI. Diesel is the best anti-theft device ever invented: no one wants the lousy things. For a reason.

Again: GTI.

WOW!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I was at my local dealer today looking for a TDI, but they only had one that hadn't been PDI'ed yet, so I have to wait until Friday/Saturday to drive it.

Here are the equivalent WRX figures:

$704.59 car payment
$210.34 insurance
$240.00 premium gas [req'd] (assuming the same 4,000km/mo)
Total: $1154.93/mo

Is the WRX a nice car? Yes it is. Does the extra cost justify itself? I'm afraid not.

Who cares if we're spending someone else's money?

:Q

Consider the GTI

1) Hard (at least for me) to find stations with diesel

2) The trees will thank you for choosing gas (cleaner emissions because with the high sulfur content of north american diesel fuel, can't use all the normal emission controlling stuff)

3) Life is too short to drive a boring car (unless the choice is between boring car and no car)

The supposidly cleaner emmisions thing is a tricky issue. Diesel does produce more dirty stuff, but fewer emmisions that are harmful the the enviroment. But you're also using about 1/2 the fuel, that cant be bad. Get the one that you like. The tdi is incredibly practical, even more so in the golf with tons of cargo room. But you can't deny that the 1.8t is a lot of fun too.

OK, I'll reword that: The trees will thank you for fewer particulate emissions.
I was convinced that diesels produced more unburnt hydrocarbons because you can't use a catalytic converter.

IMO the TDI is a great example of what a diesel engine can be, but I think that VW's 1.8T is a better all-around engine for this vehicle
