I have my car choices narrowed down to 2 cars. Here's how it breaks down (all prices in CDN dollars):

VW Golf GLS TDI
$491.00 car payment
$149.32 insurance
$93.00 diesel (monthly, assuming I put on 4,000km/mo)
Total: $765.32/mo

VW GTI 1.8T
$535.00 car payment
$181.74 insurance
$207.00 premium gas [req'd] (assuming the same 4,000km/mo)
Total $923.74/mo

My question for you is, do you think the extra $158.42/mo is worth it for the go fast GTI? 😕 The 4,000km/mo is a generous estimate, because I commute ~100km each way to work everyday. The options on the car are identical, except for the 15" alloys on the TDI and the 17" alloys on the GTI.

Help! This is driving me nuts!

<< depends on what you need it for..are you just driving to work? or racing? >>

No racing. It would be nice, but my work schedule doesn't allow for me to go to autocrosses which are on Sundays. 🙁

Glad to see the replies are picking up. 😛

TDI. Diesels are very efficient in your style of driving.

yeah, since you are only commuting, get the TDI. The gas prices are significantly different, and you may wind up being able to purchase a GTI with all that saved gas money 😀

Have you guys heard of the Upsolute chip for TDI's?

It ups the hp from 92 to ~115, and the torque from 149 to ~200. It'll be standard equipment for me after the breakin period. 😀

VW Golf GLS TDI. From what you posted the TDI will have the lower total cost of ownership in the long run, which means more money in your wallet. Hope this helps.

Gasoline engine has more power. You'd have to be willing to compromise on power and peppyness if you choose the TDI.

Why not test drive both and see which you like better?

Get the cheaper one, as you age the desire for "STATS" will outweigh the desire to impress your friends!!! By the time you're done paying for it, you will wish you had the cheaper one.

Why don't you get one of those electric cars, or you should try carpooling. Actually i think carpooling is a great idea, since you save the environment from all those harmful emissions. 🙂

Definetly TDI then, but as rgwalt said: beware of issues with diesel in the winter.

TDI - they've got gobs of torque and great gas mileage to boot.

With an UpSolute chip, you'll be burning rubber off those front two wheels.

Check VWVortex forums if you don't already know about them.
