No, they were reverse (white lights). Not sure if the lights were messed up, or the tranny was messed up so you had to shift into reverse to go forward :D My friend's brand new passat's auto tranny went, it could only go forward in 4th gear.
It was a long drive to the restaurant ;)

I've seen too many broken down new VWs and Audis, not to mention the countless that have light malfunctions. Just the other day I was behind a new Audi on the freeway, and he was going 85 with his reverse lights on. :D Get the Maxima SE though, because it has the 5 speed auto.

Are you sure those were reverse lights? There are mods that allow the Passat to enable the rear fog lights and I assume it's possible on the A4 as well.
I just heard about these, but shouldn't there be some kind of lockout circuit to prevent them from being on while traveling forward @ 85 MPH?

I was going to post for the Maxima untill I double-checked the interior online. I can no longer vote for the Maxima.

I will second AgaBooga on the Lexus ES330.
Not as much scoot as a Maxima, but more than the Audi by far.
ES330
225hp @5600rpm
240lb-ft @3600rpm
Here is the interior.

If I were buying new, I would not get an A4 or a Maxima. Both have a lot of positive attributes, but the A4 is a bit small and possibly unreliable while the Maxima is rather unattractive and has even worse resale value than the Audi.

If I had to choose, however, I would go with the Maxima. Overall, I would give it the nod due to interior room and reliability.

Unfortunately, there aren't any Lexus dealers anywhere near me either. Otherwise the ES330 would be on the list too.

What I don't get is, even if you don't have a Lexus dealer around, when you buy a new car with warranty. They most likely will give you a replacement rental car if anything happens to the car and it has to stay in the dealership for more than a day. So why worry about it so much?

Sure, but if I ever have to take it in for maintenance/problems, I'm talking about a 1½ hour drive each way. If something went wrong with the Nissan/Audi, they are about about 5-10 min from me, so I could just drop it off on my way to/from work. Plus I live in indiana and the nearest lexus/infinity dealers are over the border in illinois so sales tax is alot higher there too.

how about a tsx? or a 325i w/ snow tires in the winter and summers in the summer?

sure es330s are nice, but they are quite fugly.
i really liked the a4s, but 170 horses, awd, and auto makes it one slow car.. and questionable reliability.
maxima's are nice.. if you can get over the styling. fwd w/ lot o horses all show, all sideways go.

btw don't let driving distance to the dealer deter you from getting a car you want. how often do you go back to the dealer anyway? (case for infinity) but then again, relibility for the infiinites aren't all that great either.

i think infiniti tops reliability charts
well, they're behind porsche, but then, everyone is behind porsche.

That's why I said split the difference and go Passat. :p

Reliability, go with the Maxima.

But in all honesty, as far as interior styling goes i'd go for the Audi. If this was a last generation Maxima then fine, but the 6th generations are... just not to my liking. The floating dash design is just not very aesthetically pleasing.

I would not buy a maxima new because their depreciation is ghastly. It will drop in resale with a quickness that blindsides you and makes you wonder if you've stepped into the twilight zone.

Of course that Audi will be an absolute dog when compared to the maxima in terms of performance. Maybe it will handle better, but who cares it's got almost 100 extra less horsepower. Those things aren't rockets in the first place, especially with drivetrain loss. I would buy the maxima. Except I wouldn't buy a new one (resale).

The g35 awd is a good recommendation. If power is of importance to you drive both a g35 and a maxima, and then the audi. Then you'll drop the audi off the list immediately. Slow as hell unless you'll chip it, and then it still will lose.
or a 325i w/ snow
OK you're obviously caught up with the image of some of these cars. I'd invite you to drive the 325i. It's another dog-slow piece of sh*t. Better interior and handling than the maxima, but slow as all hell for acceleration/highway cruising, etc. You're paying in great part for the BMW badge.

Take these cars out for a drive. Only then can you really make a decision. I have to say, though, that I drove a late model 325i a few months ago and was thoroughly underwhelmed for what the high sticker price buys you. Hell, why not buy a mazda rx8? Faster than all of these and prices start at $27k. If concerned about reliability get an extended warranty.

If its for family get the Nissan. If its just for you and one other person, get the Audi. The Nissan has a huge back row. The Audi is tiny. The trunk in the Audi is very small. I don't think my golf clubs would fit in there.

We have a 8 month old baby so I would need a car seat in the back.

Also, I looked at the BMW 3 Series, but when I started adding the options I wanted, the price went up too much for me.
