Get a compact 45. Here is a nice review/comparison of 4 pistols including Glock, HK, and my favorite, the Springfield V10.

I agree with what the majority is saying here. Go with the higher calibur.

Also go to a shooting range and test out a few of their rental guns and see which one feels right to you.

I personally would go with a Glock 30.

I too am looking. While I have an affinity for Colt 1911s, I've been looking at SIGs, particulary the P220 with a Nitron coating in a .40 loadout. I've heard some handgun fanatics say that .40 rates better ballistically than a .45 *shrugs*

Haha-I just bought a S&W .44 Mag a few weeks ago with a 6 1/2" barrel. Looks very similar but I know that .500 is friggin' massive. Makes the .44 Magnum look like a mouse gun.

Eh. I wouldn't bet my life on a nine killing an invader. In order to get me to operate a convenience store, you'd have to give me a .50 or a 12 gauge - somthing with some frickin stopping power.

Thanks for the advise, but I was a Marine (I do have some firearms training 😉), and I wasn't gonna shoot any one, unless I absolutely have to. I just want to detain the bastages and hand them over. As for stopping power, trust, me, 10 9mm slugs will stop any body.

You might want to consider a larger weapon like a shotgun just for the sheer awe factor. A punk sees that pointed at them, they'll either run or sh!t themselves. Appearance can make quite a difference.
