I've narrowed my choices down to these two. Any input you have would be appreciated. Our opponents today consist of the Samsung SyncMaster 955sl its got the short neck of a 15 incher(thats what they say anyway) Its price is 298.95 with a $30 rebate thats 268.95+shipping :) and in the other corner is the NEC AS90 It uses a Mitsubishi tube(which I think is pretty good)oh yeah cost $289.95+shipping Mostly what I do is surf the net play golf(Links LS) and I've really gotten into Icewind Dale. My system specs are in my sig. Thanks

That's a pretty tough choice. I have a couple-year old 21" NEC (not absolutely flat, but flat enough) and also a Samsung 955DF (which is like the one you're looking at but with the longer neck.) When I got the Samsung I compared it in-store with the Sonys, NECs, etc and it looked the best by far. Image quality is superb, slightly better than my 21", but I still use the big one as my primary monitor. To sum up, I vote for the Samsung.

WetSprocket,

A couple of weeks ago we ordered and recieved a NEC AS90 at work. When it was delivered I fired it up and observed the worst display I'd ever seen. The AS90 was out of focus, very fuzzy, simply unusable. I called NEC and they walked me through the usual trouble shooting step to no avail, so they immediately shipped a new AS90.

When the new AS90 came it was fine. It was a very clear and in focus. NEC paid to have our old unit shipped back to them and all in all provided excellent service to resolve the problem.

I didn't test any 3D stuff withe the AS90 but I wouldn't be afraid of buying another one, it seems to be a pretty good monitor.

Good luck with your decision.

I would recommend a Samsung monitor but I heard several times that a short neck tube produces a lower quality image. How about considering the Samsung 955DF since that is a good 19" around that price range though the refresh rates aren't too good.

However, the 955SL is a shadow mask while the AS90 is a aperture grill. Do you want a shadow mask, aperture grill, or does it matter?

Anyone have a link to describe the qualities of these different technologies. Here it is in a nutshell clear for games and CAD, but most of all in the $300 range.(budget)

From NEC's website the AS90 is an Invar Shadow Mask I would probably run the recommended resolution of 1280x1024 @ 85htz
