Help me decide between ASUS MAXIMUS IV EXTREME and ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3(Z68)

To make a long story short, I'm building myself a new rig. The one in my sig will go to my kids. I'm not really doing something that my current rig can't do, but it is just the upgrade bug kicking in again. I love to brag about my system, win benchmarks, and get the most of any system.

As you might have guessed, I will be getting the i7 2600k CPU, and see if I can get it to 5GHz. I need a 1155 mobo of course. I have been using gigabyte for the last ten years. Now I want to get an ASUS. I really like the maximus iv extreme but the new chipset Z68 looks good as well so I'm kinda of undecided.

I will use a SSD disk for my OS, and I don't know how that relates to the new feature of the Z68 chipset (SSD cashing or whatever it is called).

I'm not a hardcore gamer(at least not now), so I will most likely use one high end GPU or probably two in SLI maximum.

I will answer questions if necessary...

Which mobo do you recommend? You know, if the P8Z68 can do all I want, then I think I'll just go with it since it is the cheaper one.

Thanks.

Now that you mentioned it, it seems like the logical choice for me. Thanks.

I changed my mind. I will be using a SSD drive for my OS, so Z68 won't be of any real advantage to me. P67 is more mature and I can see that it can be found cheaper than its Z counterpart.

Go with Extreme-Z and you get the Z68 chipset, one stone, two birds.

?

They both have the z68, the Extreme I think just supports more Video cards (and costs more).

I just picked up the P8Z68-v Pro/Gen 3 and have been using it about a week.
Kind of a pain to get working with older components, but it seems okay so far.

What do you mean by working with older components?

Well, on boot up sometimes it will recognize my Keyboard and sometimes it won't.

I thought it (Keyboard) was a USB 2.0 model, but it may be earlier.

The Keyboard works fine, it just sometimes has fits acknowledging that it sees it, even though it's still working.

It also sometimes thinks I have two Mice on boot up.

HD recognition was a challenge too - I'm running my older SATA I models which sometimes would be seen and sometimes wouldn't.

Made it kind of difficult to install an OS . . . .

yeah.. wanderer is right. The Extreme Z has greater numbers of PCI-E lanes for extra video cards/raidcards vs the P8Z68. The Extreme also uses the faster marvell 9182 sata chip which utilizes x2 lanes rather than the measily x1 lane of the other Marvell chips being used on most others.

Only time I would spend the extra cash for the M4EZ is when I wanted to have more than 2 fast 6G SSD's and/or multiple video cards. Otherwise the differences will never be taken advantage of or realized at all.
