*NOTE* This thread has been edited; before I was asking which laptop to buy; now that I've decided, about 16 or 17 posts into the topic is when I edited this.

I'm buying one for college. I'm getting it for gaming, school, and some processor-intensive applications (i.e. video editing.) And no, I'm not getting a mac. I want to be able to play what comes out game-wise for the next couple years (and I don't mean full settings, just play.) Battery power isn't too much of an issue, as though I will need portability, I won't be constantly using it on the quad. Pretty much anywhere I'd be using it there'd be a plug. So, here's what I'm going to try to do.

Intel® Pentium® M Processor 750 (1.86 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB)

Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition

17 inch UltraSharp? Wide Screen XGA+ Display

1Yr Ltd Warranty, 1Yr Mail-In Service, and 1Yr Technical Support

256MB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz 1 Dimm

8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer write capability (note that I included this to bring it above the $2,000 price so I could use the coupon; it was the only upgrade I was interested in. If anybody thinks another upgrade would be a better deal than this, tell me. The DVD burner costs $100 more than the CD burner/DVD player. Burning DVDs isn't a necessity to me, though it would be cool. I'm sure I could buy a spindle of blank DVDs, and use my ipod to burn it on somebody else's computer if need be.)

6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery (53 WHr)

256MB NVIDA® GeForce? Go 6800

40GB Hard Drive

This all adds up to $2,027 before tax. After this coupon:

Save $750 on any Inspiron Notebook purchase of $1999 or more. Coupon expires 5/12/05 at 5:59 am CT or after 3000 uses, whichever comes first.

it gets knocked down to $1,277.00.

Now, here's where the next $250 or so comes in. You'll notice that everything except the processor, the graphics card, and the DVD burner is the lowest available from Dell. Because their prices to upgrade via them are so much, I'm going to do it myself. So this is where I need advice.

The hard drive and the RAM are what I plan on upgrading myself. I'm looking at getting a 60 GB HDD and a gig of ram. So does anybody have a reccommenation along those lines of what to get, either specifically or just brand-wise? I'm looking for the best deal possible that would still have good performance; I don't need a 7200 RPM HDD or really expensive RAM. Just something that works well/quiet/cool/smooth/whatever it happens to have and won't cause a bottleneck.

Also, I'm going to sell what Dell gives me HDD and RAM wise on ebay or something. I figure I could get around $50 for the HDD and as for the RAM...not a whole lot, but a few bucks. With other accessories I'll be getting (optical mouse, cat5 cable, carrying case) by shopping for deals elsewhere, I figure I'll meet or barely exceed my $1500 budget.

So, further advice is much appreciated and I thank all of you who have helped me so far, you've been really helpful.

Also, I'm assuming notebook hard drives are standard. Correct?

You can get a nicely specced Dell 9300 for near your budget after coupons. I would go for the 6800go, minimum ram and HD (upgrade those later yourself), regular screen and the highest cpu your budget will allow.

Here's my spec:

1.86 P-M, 256 RAM, 40 GB HD (Upgrade both yourself), regular 17" screen and 6800go for $1276 (before tax but after coupon). If you call Dell, you MIGHT be able to get a better deal for upgrades such as RAM. If not, look for good deals on HD's and DDR2 SoDIMMS.

Hmm...I suppose I could get a few bucks swapping the old HDD out and selling on ebay, and RAM is never hard to find a deal on... Looks interesing...any other ideas? Also anybody know anything about student discounts via Dell (if there are any)?

Oh yeah, and what is the coupon code you're using? I've been googling it and can't find a non-expired one.

If they expire, just wait a few days and a new one will come out.

Thanks...what a great feeling, seeing the price go down by $750. Looks like I could get a 60GB HDD for $30 more if I sell the original 40GB on ebay, they all seem to be going for around $70 Buy It Now for the 40 GB and around $100 Buy It Now for the 60GB. Ram I should be able to pick up at some computer store or something with a rebate pretty cheap...makes me tempted to raise the processor speed to its highest. Would that make a big difference and is it worth the $200 more from the one you reccommended?

Finally, as a random question, what are the screens that I mentioned before, the glowing ones with just about any viewing angle? As in what are they called technically? Just wondering...

Processor upgrades are usually okay at the lower grades ~+$100, but after that they are just prohibitively expensive...

Recommendation: focus on your studies, and save money by buying a good all-around laptop.

That's also why i'm limiting myself in price; I do want a laptop thats good for gaming but I don't want to go overboard. The Inspiron seems to be good all-around, so I think I'm going to go with that. It'll be at least a couple months till I acutally buy what I want, so hopefully there might be some kind of additional price discount or something by then.

You just leave this thread alone and it will slowly filter downwards and eventually be archived.

But instead I would just edit your original post and change it to whatever your new question is, saves forum bandwidth ;)

the ram you can sell for a good 30-40 bucks if you're lucky because it's ddr2.
the HD can go for around 50.

newegg is a great place to get deals on both new RAM and a new HD for upgrading. I'd recommend a seagate because they tend to run smoothly and have a 5 year warranty standard.

1 gig ram at newegg - under $120
ND6500a dvd burner at newegg - $104 / Dell - $129
seagate 100 gig 5400 drive - $175 (read - write close to hitachi 7200)
Ditch the dell burner and get the spare 9 cell battery instead but keep the 6 that comes with it.

I've been looking around at RAM, and this is what I've come up with:

http://www.pricewatch.com/h/prc.aspx?i=79&a=258520

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820208024

Any of those look like a good bet? My friend told me not to go with the newegg one because it's generic brand, but I'd like a second opinion. For the price I think I'd settle as long as there aren't any serious risks that go along with it...and it has a lifetime warranty.

Also, RamIt, buying a DVD burner outside wouldn't help me much becasue I need to spend that extra $100, so why not spend it on something that I want to get, even if it is a bit more expensive (what I'm tryhing to say is, if I got the battery instead and the DVD burner from newegg or something, I'd be spending more money than I would otherwise).
Your other reccomendations seem good but are a bit out of my price range (well, except for the RAM, of course.)

Any HDD reccomenations that are around 60 GB 5400 RPM for less than $80 or so? I saw a few on Newegg, but have no idea what to select.

If you purchase the spare 9 cell battery it will cost you $99 now or if you want to purchase it later from dell it will run you $175 or $129 if you get the XPS2 battery.

Last I looked the cd burner/dvd drive was a $29 upgrade which you could Ebay for ~$60-$75. The DVD burner upgrade was $129.

The ram should work fine with many people reporting sucess on hte XPS2, 6000 and the 9300. I purchased the Kingston value ram 1gig stick for mine and it works fine even paired up with the 256meg Samsung next to it.
