That entirely depends on your experience assembling/troubleshooting and the kind of system you want.

If it's your first time building a system - I would tell him to buy the Dell.

DUDE, you're getting a dell!

In addition, assuming you are experienced enough to build/troubleshoot and the person financing the computer thinks the same as well:

[1] COST - if you can build a system with better parts at a lower price, then do so.

The only advantages I can think of in buying a DELL system is the warranty/support and it's a known name brand system - the parts have been designed and tested to work together more reliably than a home made jobber. In order to get low costs computer components, you'll probably use an online retailer or a local small computer outlet. When you buy parts from an on-line retailer, you have to send the part back and wait for the replacement to arrive - which on average take at least a week. That's computer downtime. If you buy from a local computer shop, there isn't a guarantee the part will be in if it needs to be replaced. And, depending upon what kind of warranty you buy from DELL, most, if not all small computer shops only warrant their parts for 1 year. DELL offers 3 years warranty.

Dell doesn't carry AMD Athlon processors.

Make him watch that Dell commercial a few hundred times. He'll either go completely nuts, or will want to build an AMD compter himself...

Why to buy parts and piece together a PC? because it's fun, it's the hobbyist thing... it's probably not going to last you any longer than the Dell, or be necessarily any faster, but you'll save a few pennies and have fun making your own PC in doing so...

I build my own because I like to.... it has never ever crossed my mind when doing something related to my PC that anyone other than me should do it.. No such companies as Dell or HP or Compaq in my head... no sireebob..

I say build your own. If you want to hear opinions of people in favor of building their own, then go over to the Motherboard forum. The people in the general hardware forum just bought theirs anyway. Most of the people in this forum don't even know what a motherboard is. And other peoples suggestions that you wont know what parts are compatible, ask anyone in the motherboards forum what would be a tried and true configuration and they would be more than happy to help you. Building your own PC is very fun and fullfilling. Everyone has to start somewhere. If you have a lot of trouble, then you can always take it to your local PC shop and they'll help you figure it out. And even with the price of the proffesional assisstance it will still be cheaper than buying a manufactured PC. Give us your needs, preferences, and budjet and we will be more than happy to help you build one.

LOL
what i did was list parts and prices and compare it to anything Dell, Gateway, Best Buy, etc has to offer, and if you plan on doing something with computers as a career it's a good first step

Do you know what you're doing? Have you ever done it before? Have someone who knows what they're doing help you! I'm sure a lot of members here wouldn't mind lending a hand. Where do you live? Why don't you get a custom computer built from somewhere else?

nourdmrolNMT1 - if you haven't "build" a system before, and if you're not paying for it, then you'll have a hard time in getting him to let you do this....

You'd better let him buy the system he wants and get a part time job to build the system you want...:)

Okay, then if it's a computer for you, then tell them that in the long run that Dell services will cost you more than if you build your own...

Dell still uses proprietary parts, don't they? If that's the case, then when you build your own and ever have to repair the system you could do it more cheaply then Dell can...

The last I heard was during the PII/Intel 440lx days days. It was something about a propiety power supply that made it almost impossible for people to upgrade via powerleap PL-P3. Now Dell uses a regular parts. If I am correct, they use the same parts as Gateway's Intel systems.

If your dad is paying for it, get a DELL. I think DELL is the only company I'd decide to buy from instead of building a machine.
Just get a GOOD Dell.

Build your own so you can be 1337 like me! My rig is sweet cept it has some problems and it wont boot up sometimes but i fix it cause im 1337 and i fried my proccessor and its sad but i bought a new one cause i have lots of $$$$$$ and i like to spend it but as long as you dont burn out your CPU then you will be super 1337 and it will be good for you to learn how a computer works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111

Sometimes its cheaper to buy from Dell, and long warranty is good. But a lot of companies make getting warranty service such a pain that its not much of a benefit. One thing I found with companies with cheap computers is that so much of it is onboard crap, and upgrading can be a real pain if even possible at all. Like a motherboard with no AGP slot.

I'm going to say: get the dell. for 2 reasons.

1. i bought a dell refurb about a year and a half ago. best computer experience ever. wanna know why? read reason # 2.
2. if your personalized rig goes down for whatever reason, you know where tech support is (points at nourdmrol).

most of my family uses the computer.

dell scenario: if mom gets on, and its broke, i can call dell and bitch.
custom rig scenario: *mom bitches and curses at me in chinese*

IMHO, get the dell. i dont like dealing with parents yelling and cursing in cantonese. my .02.

dells support from what i've seen has been good and bad. My friends HD died (along w/ the onboard controller). Waiting for a LONG time on the phone, got one run around w/ level 1 techs... "is your computer plugged in? Can you try to boot w/ the boot cd?".... after specificaly saying he had already gone thru all that. Then finally got a dell guy to come out and "check it out". He never showed on the first day he was suppose to come. The good thing from this was he was competent and the instant he realized the HD didn't even spin w/ power, just gave him a refurbed 27GB 34gxp (was a 22gxp).

If nothing else, it will cost less. 2 months ago I built a 1.4GHz Thunderbird for a friend of mine and only paid $1,100 for everything. That same system built by Dell would cost about $1,900.
