Yep, $3,000 so far this year to keep it going, not make it safe. I haven't driven it after the repairs (it may still be int he shop for all I know), but I doubt the current repairs left it in a like-new condition.

It sounds like the thing is your dads hobby. Emotional attachment to it. I would recommend they get a new car, but he might want to keep the van. If it is unsafe and your mom feels afraid in it, and he is being stubborn, its not really stubbornness, its called "being a jackass". It takes more than being stubborn to make your family feel unsafe.
