Help Me Choose Parts for a "Grandma" Low Performance Rig

Hello everyone,

I've only put together one computer in the past (for myself, a i5 2500, HD 6850 rig) and I'm now interested in putting together a computer for a friend's grandmother.

This would be extremely low budget - she wouldn't be doing much aside from opening Firefox and OpenOffice. A smart phone would likely do everything she needs, but she prefers a desktop as its more comfortable... larger screen... easier to type, on etc...

The goal is to come up with the cheapest price tag without putting together a rig that will break down quickly due to poor brand choices, etc...

My primary question is this: I realize when you need a good amount of performance it makes sense to build instead of buy a computer, as you can get more bang for your buck. My question is... does building your own computer make sense from an economical standpoint when performance is of no concern? Would I be better off buying one of the cheaper pre-builts out there? Or are there still savings to be had in building in my case?

1. It will be used for web browsing, and word processing.

2. Budget - lowest possible price considering that we want semi-reputable brand choices, but very low performance demands. I would say $300-400 is the absolute maximum, and anything below this is optimal.

3. I'll be buying the parts from the United States

4. I do not have any brand preferences.

5. Only peripherals will be recycled (mouse, keyboard, monitor) - all of the computer components will need to be bought new.

6. I haven't searched many similar threads as I'm not sure what to call this type of build - low-performance? Bare-bones?

7. I will not be doing any overclocking at all.

8. The computer will not be used for gaming at all. I imagine nearly all integrated graphic solutions in 2011 can handle decent desktop resolutions for everyday computing. This will definitely be a single monitor setup.

9. I will be building this computer in the next month or two - once the parts are decided on.

Any bundle deals that allow for savings to be had would be excellent. I have virtually no brand preference so I'd love to hear any and all ideas.

Thanks!

This calls for a prebuilt machaine you can't build them as cheap as the big guys and with that budget I'd suggest the Dell outlet or if you have a local big box store near you just buy the one with the best specs for your budget any modern desktop should be fine.

Considering the cost of the OS is 1/4 of your budget, I'd bo with a prebuilt that comes with an OEM copy of windows 🙂 If you really want to peice it together, this is what I threw together:

Case: Xion - 180 Case $25

PSU: Antec BasiQ BP350 $30

Mobo: Biostar H61MGC $50

Ram: Patriot 4gb (2x2gb) $25

Video: MSI Geforce 210 $15

DVD Burner: Samsung $18

HDD: HP 160gb $65

CPU: Intel G530 2.4ghz Sandy Bridge $57

All of this equals $285usd.
Add Windows 7 OEM for $100 and you get $385 total.

Anything I'm missing?

Dell all the way. Win7 alone is $100. You avoid being granny's dependable service man.

20% off Dell Outlet.

People are claiming some pretty awesome deals, i-5 for 350 and stuff.

There's a deal on a pretty bad Dell slim for $220, NO DVD burner, NO 1080 video, 250W psu, 2x1GB RAM, slim case:
If they use a smaller monitor it may work. The thing is - it does list next-biz-day onsite service!

Good luck.

Thanks trexpesto!! Definitely looks like there are some great Dell deals to be had - I'll keep an eye out on the links you included. I doubt she would ever even burn a CD, but I would feel a lot more comfortable if the computer at least had the ability to burn a quick CD. Otherwise I would have snatched up one of those $220 Dell Slims in a heartbeat!!!

Thanks for the heads up on Slickdeals and FatWallet - wasn't aware of either site, they both seem great.

$20 for a new DVD burner.. $240 still OK. Ram is cheap too.
The killer is the lack of 1080, which are like most monitors now, and the low-pow psu.
I like the quiet of most Dells, but no idea what this one is like.

Wait, you have a Sandy Bridge; why get a discrete video card? Anyway, I can do better than that. Maybe a worse PSU, but for only $350 you can get...

Pentium G620(2.60GHz), 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD Capacity, Intel HD Graphics 2000, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Oh, you left out keyboard and mouse.

...in a lenovo H420 (77521RU) Desktop PC.

In other words, pre-built all the way!

I would expect some kind of killer sale before Christmas from Dell. I think 720p is more than enough to watch video. However, if you had broadband and ever think about streaming online TV/movies to a widescreen TV, then having HDMI output might be nice.

I could see some people liking Widescreen TV and some liking a monitor depending on what kind of eyesight the person has. I have no problem seeing up close and from the couch without glasses, my TV looks a little out of focus. However, some people are the opposite. So I really prefer an up-close monitor. Depends if you are near sighted or far sighted. Sight-wise I and my wife are opposite, so we need both. It seems like as soon as you hit 40 your sight starts getting worse.

XFX 5670 for $42 AR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150535
Although it is DX11, not really powerful enough to run DX11 games
I got a fanless 5670 for cheap a while back because it was the highest-rated slot-powered card I could run. Nice for videos, not for gaming. Not sure if it would fit in a slim case.
Plus now there's all these integrated options.

DSUB/VGA will result in a fuzzier picture compared to DVI, correct? or can it be just as good with the correct drivers?

Yes, but it is very hard to tell the difference until you get into higher resolution displays.

OP, and here is another vote for Dell Outlet or B&M BF deals.
