Help me choose my laptop!

Here's the two configurations I'm thinking of. The Dell is 1102$ after tax and shipping, the Compaq is 1108$. No extras added in (printer bundles, etc).

v2000:

Compaq Presario V2000 customizable Notebook PC
PT165AV

* ? Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition with SP2
* ? Intel(R) Pentium(R) M Processor 750 (1.86 GHz)
* ? 14.0" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x768)
* ? Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 900 - Pentium
* ? 256MB DDR SDRAM (1x256MB)
* ? 80 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
* ? 8X DVD Drive
* ? Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG WLAN
* ? 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
* ? Microsoft(R) Works/Money
* ? hpshopping in-box envelope

Inspiron 6000:

1.73GHz Pentium-M
80GB 5400RPM
512MB (2*256) RAM
Intel Extreme Integrated Graphics
15.4" WXGA
9 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
DVD/CD-Burner (burns at CD 24x)
Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG WLAN

I will be getting a 1GB stick of DDR2 533Mhz RAM from Newegg...so the 512RAM in the Inspiron really doesn't matter to me since its 2*256MB.

This is very difficult. The main thing I want in my laptop is battery life...after all, it is a laptop. So that means the Inspiron 6000 isn't going to have as good life compared to the v2000. Not only does it have a 15.4" screen (this is nice, but it does hurt battery life), but it has a 5400RPM HDD with only a 9 Cell Li-ION battery. The v2000, however, has a 12 Cell battery with a smaller screen (I think the brightness of the v2000 is better than the Inspiron 6000).

I'm leaning towards the v2000, especially considering my floor alone in my dorm has had 3 people's Dell's hard drives go caput, one guy's replacement broke as well.

Of course the Dell doesn't come with the XP Cd, but thats not a problem because I get all my Windows softwares free through GT.

Also I plan on putting Linux on this.

What are your all's thoughts?

I was planning on a 60GB 4200RPM, but decided I'd need something faster.

5400/4200 < 80/60.

So I chose the 80GB drive.
A 5400RPM 80GB will only be (54/42) times faster. Not a very big difference. You sure?

Regarding the 12-cell battery on the V2000/V2000Z series, it sticks out of the bottom and raises it a bit so the bottom of the notebook isnt flat on the table surface. This is actually better for cooling, but it looks slightly odd. The Brightview screens on the HP/Compaqs are nice.

from a dv1000 user with the 12-cell, it's better for cooling and typing, i find. and you can't beat 8hr of battery life.

how heavy is the 12 cell batt? total weight wise i mean.

Out of those two configs I would go with the Compaq. The 4200rpm drive is slower but will be fine for general web browsing and email. As the others have said the 12 cell does hang off of the bottom of the laptop and will add a bit more weight so consider that as well (The compaq shoulds till be lighter then the dell even with the 12 cell though). You are getting a slightly faster processor, the memory is a wash because of the 1gb stick from newegg, and I personally like the way the compaq is styled more then the 6000. IMHO that adds up to the Compaw being the btter purchase.

i think it does add 0.5lb at least. i haven't measured though.

Yes the 12cell adds a little over a half a pound bringing the total weight for the v2000z to seven pounds. At first I was bitchin about the total weight, but I got used to it.
