alrite lets say my budget is 2000 dollars.

does a difference in 100mhz in the processor really make much of a difference? will a 1.4 pentium M be alot faster than 1.5

and are there any major differences between the t41 and t42 series? or is the difference the customizable options you choose.

Hmm . . . a 1.4 pentium M probably won't be faster than 1.5 . . . oddly enough- it may even be SLOWER. Who woulda thunk.

one more question:

should i spend more money and go for the 15 inch over the 14 inch?

is the 1024x768 resolution is adequate?

I would want the 15-inch display. Personally, I got spoiled by the 1600x1200 15-inch display on my A21p ThinkPad so I tend not to like 1024x768. But 1024x768 is the standard resolution now and it's perfectly fine. It's the resolution I use every day at work.

You've definitely made a good decision by going IBM, the ThinkPads are great machines. Mine's 4 years old and it's still solid.

Get the 15" if you can.

Rob

are the 15" screen T40's as thin as the 14.1" T40's?

Amen, I would NEVER buy a laptop with a 15.0" XGA resolution.

SXGA would be ideal.

thanx! i was looking at the IBM site, and the only 15" model that i had an interest in was 400 dollars more than the 14" that i was going to get. this isnt my money, its my 'going to college" present from my mom, so i think im pretty much forced to go the 14" way. good thing someone is satisfied with the 14

I've also read that ghosting is significantly worse on the 15" than the 14.1". Most people are recommending the 14.1" if you are into gaming or video at all.

how hard is it to upgrade the ram, is it something that i can do myself? i've never had a laptop before so i wouldnt know how to do it. if i order from IBM, should i pay 100 dollars more to upgrade ram, or do it myself?

If you can find it yourself for cheaper then do it that way.

It's extremely simple, basically just unscrewing a panel on the bottom and popping the stick of ram in.

That was how it is on the Dell that we had, but I imagine that it would be the same on most laptops~ :)

You definitely wont be disapointed with your new purchase. One thing I would recomend would be to get the SXGA+ over the XGA. The higher resolution screan is worth the money if you like to multi task. Take if from a college student, you will want this in a few months if you don't buy it now. While XGA isn't tiny, it's nowhere near what some companies are now putting on their high end machines. I would definitely go w/ the SXGA+ if you go 14" (14" would be my personal choice too!).

i am definitely going the sxga+ route, right now, i use dual 19" monitors running at 1280x960 each, so any resolution smaller than that would be hard for me to use. looking forward to 1400x1050
