Help me choose memory

Here is the dilemma to add memory to DELL 3000 Celeron 2.4GHz 533Mhz FSB. The board is dual channel capable. There is 256MB single stick in the system.

1. Add 256MB to make it 512MB and run in dual channel mode.

2. Add 512MB to make it 768MB, but it will run in single channel only.

Which one will be better in terms of overall performance?

definitely the higher memory.

With Dual Channel, you are lucky to see an increase of 5% I would think.
With an extra 256MB, should help things out a bit more -
BUT, defragging your hdd will help even more

Thats not really true with most intel setups, I think it would do alot more, than the 512, 256 x2 dual channelled would be better for 'overall' everday computing/multitasking.
